According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the incident involving Tanisha Williams occurred around 6:22 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, at West Lake Mead Boulevard and Jeanne Drive. A 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor struck the child after he suddenly ran into the street, police confirmed via a press release.

The child was rushed to University Medical Center’s Trauma Center with critical injuries. The SUV driver remained at the scene and was unharmed, authorities said.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, speaking to KSNV, said the child sustained several broken bones. “It could have been a lot worse,” he added. “This child could have lost his life.”

The boy’s guardian, identified by Fox 5 Vegas as Williams, told reporters she panicked when she realized the child had slipped out of the house. Tanisha Williams, the girlfriend of the child’s dad, claimed had multiple locks and a secured gate.

“I haven’t seen him open doors like that,” she said. An eyewitness told News 3 Las Vegas that they immediately rushed to help after spotting the child on the ground.

The investigation is ongoing. Wolfson noted Williams had been released from jail but remains under scrutiny. He also emphasized that the child’s father, as the primary caregiver, holds significant responsibility. PEOPLE reported that police had not yet issued an update as of May 20.
