Sara Seymour, 29, pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent on April 21 in Hendricks County court. Prosecutors dropped an additional charge of failure to report the abuse, reported PEOPLE and CBS News. Judge Rhett Stuard sentenced her to one year in jail but suspended 363 days, crediting her with two days already served.

The disturbing incident occurred on February 16, 2023, at Brown Elementary School in Brownsburg. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, security footage shows a young boy gagging and vomiting during lunch.

Seymour directed him to sit down while another teacher, 63-year-old Deborah Kanipe, allegedly handed him a spoon. The boy was then seen eating some of the vomit under the supervision of Seymour and Kanipe.

The affidavit states Sara Seymour had previously warned the boy that he would be forced to eat his vomit if he became sick. After a month-long delay in reporting the incident, a police investigation led to the resignation or termination of all five staff members present.

Kanipe, who faces identical charges, declined a plea deal and is scheduled to stand trial in June. The Brownsburg Police Department condemned the actions in a public statement, calling the situation “completely unacceptable.”
