A Georgia teenager and two parents are facing felony charges following a high-speed crash in February that killed an 18-year-old.
Sophia Lekiachvili, a Lakeside High School student died in a crash, which involved a Mazda CX-5 driven by 18-year-old Hannah Hackemeyer, who has since been charged with three counts of first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and driving under the influence (DUI), Law & Crime reports.
Authorities allege Hackemeyer was driving 98 mph and had a blood alcohol level over twice the legal limit for minors at the time of the crash. Investigators also discovered an open bottle of wine in the vehicle. Lekiachvili, who was in the front passenger seat, was trapped in the wreckage and later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
DeKalb District Attorney Sherry Boston announced that parents Sumanth and Anindita Rao, whose daughter Ananya was a passenger in the car, are also being held accountable. The parents reportedly allowed the teens to drink alcohol at their home before the crash. They have been charged with reckless conduct and furnishing alcohol to minors.
“While Hannah Hackemeyer was the one behind the wheel that terrible night, we have determined that she was not the only one responsible for what happened,” Boston said in a statement.
