Tennessee Man Charged for Deadly Home Invasion After College Student Refused to Give Passcode to Electronic Device

According to People, A Tennessee man, Rainess Holmes, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in a deadly 2021 home invasion.

Andrew “Drew” Rainer, a 22-year-old Rhodes College student, was killed after refusing to give the passcode to his iPad.

Around 5:40 a.m. on Oct. 3, four men broke into Rainer’s off-campus home in Memphis. According to police, the intruders demanded electronics, told the students not to make eye contact, and ordered Rainer to unlock his iPad.

When he refused, one of the armed men shot him. Rainer died at the bottom of the staircase inside his home.

40-year-old Holmes pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years behind bars. Holmes also has a criminal record with charges going back to 2005.

Additionally, he pleaded guilty to three separate aggravated burglary cases and received an additional three-year sentence, which he’ll serve at the same time.

The suspects stole a variety of electronic devices. 

Investigators later tracked one of the stolen iPads to a nearby hotel. Holmes initially got away from officers but was arrested two days later.

The other three suspects are still at large. Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to their arrest.

Rainer’s death greatly impacted the Rhodes College community. He had a passion for music, was a member of the Rhodes Jazz Ensemble, and was active in his church.

A memorial fund called Live Like Drew was created to honor his bravery and selflessness.
