The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 6, in El Paso. Deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office pulled over 27-year-old Ivana Dolores Salazar for failing to signal a lane change. This was revealed by Sheriff Oscar Ugarte in a statement.

During the traffic stop, officers noticed a clear glass container filled with an unknown red liquid. This led them to suspect Salazar was intoxicated. When questioned, she claimed she was on her way to pick up her newborn after finishing her shift at work and insisted she was alone in the vehicle.

However, officers searching the car discovered a five-month-old baby in a car seat that had not been properly secured. When asked again about the child, Salazar repeated her statement that she had just left work and was going to pick up her baby.

According to a report by People, authorities then directed her to the backseat and pointed out the child. According to Ugarte, she allegedly responded that she “did not know” the baby was in the vehicle. After that, she reportedly stopped cooperating with police.

The infant was transported to a hospital for evaluation and later released to a responsible party. Child Protective Services was notified. Salazar is currently in custody at the El Paso County Jail. Ivana Dolores Salazar faces charges of DWI with a child under 15 and child endangerment.
