A tragic work site accident occurred after a Mississippi bridge in Simpson County collapsed. Since September 18, the area 40 miles south of Jackson was closed to traffic after being earmarked for demolition. According to the Department of Transportation, the crew in charge of the project were at it when the fatality occurred. As of Thursday morning, the cause of the accident had not been confirmed. However, Simpson County Coroner, Terry Tutor affirmed that seven workers had employed heavy machinery to bring down the structure.

USA Today reports that the bridge gave way, falling 40 feet below, and swallowing three of the workers. Four were lucky to make it out alive but with injuries. The body overseeing the project has since extended their condolences.
Governor Tate Reeves has confirmed the news via social media. He also asked for privacy for the grieving families, while adding that they be kept in prayers. About the surviving four, the Simpson County Sheriff, Paul Mullins, told WLBT that their condition is critical.
During the bridge collapse in Mississippi, an inspector from the state’s Department of Transportation was on site to supervise. Fortunately, the official was unharmed. Pete Buttigieg, US Transportation Secretary made a post on X about the accident. He explained that the Federal Highway Administration was working in tandem with state officials.
