Transgender actress Hunter Schafer revealed in a TikTok video that her passport now lists her sex as male instead of female, following an executive order from President Trump. In the video, she discussed the “harsh realities” of getting a new passport after hers was stolen. 

The Euphoria actress explained that the executive order, signed on Trump’s first day in office, stated the U.S. would “recognize two sexes, male and female,” and that identity documents like passports must “accurately reflect the holder’s sex,” per PEOPLE. 

In her video, Schafer said the Bureau of Consular Affairs has stopped passport applications that ask for a sex different from what was assigned at birth. She thought Trump’s order was not serious but was surprised to see her new passport marked as male, while all her previous IDs are female.

How Did Hunter Loose Her Passport?

The actress needed a new passport after hers was stolen while filming in Barcelona last year. She visited a federal passport agency in Los Angeles and followed the same steps as before, including selecting female as her sex on the application.

She said, “When [my passport] was picked up today and I opened it up, they had changed the marker to male.. I was shocked. I just didn’t think it was actually going to happen.”

Schafer acknowledged her privilege as a White, celebrity trans woman but said the gender marker change still impacted her. She shared her fear about how these policies will be carried out.

“I don’t give a f— that they put an M on my passport.. It doesn’t change anything about me or my transness. However, it does make life a little harder,” she continued. 

Schafer will travel abroad with her new passport next week and is worried she will have to share her identity with customs more than she wants. She also understands that others in the transgender community may face the same issues now or in the future.
