A Michigan man who faced more than 20 years in prison for threatening to kill his daughter’s teachers and burn their school to the ground avoided jail time on Tuesday.
Instead, Thomas Latting, 38, of Detroit, was sentenced to probation and mandatory anger management therapy after pleading guilty to charges of making terroristic threats MLive.com reports.
The charges stemmed from an incident in February when Latting became enraged over disciplinary action taken against his 10-year-old daughter at her elementary school. Prosecutors said Latting called the school office, threatening to kill teachers and “burn this b***h to the ground.”
The threats prompted a lockdown and increased police presence at the school.
During sentencing at Wayne County Circuit Court, Judge Andrea Moore acknowledged the gravity of the situation but opted for a sentence focused on rehabilitation rather than incarceration.
“Mr. Latting’s actions caused significant fear and disruption,” Judge Moore said. “However, the court believes that rehabilitation and support, rather than imprisonment, will better serve both the defendant and the community in this case.”
Assistant Prosecutor Rachel Green argued that such actions could not be taken lightly. “Threats of violence against educators and schools are unacceptable, especially in today’s climate. We must send a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated,” Green said.

#Clique, so white folks are literally shooting up schools and a blatant threat to a school and teachers means nothing. Just wow.
