The New Orleans community is in mourning after a devastating crash on December 11 claimed the lives of 17-year-olds Giselle Smith and Semaj Morris.
The crash occurred when a vehicle driven by suspected shoplifters, fleeing police in Jefferson Parish, collided with the teens’ car at high speed, WLBT reports.
Smith’s 21-year-old sister, Paris Kiper, who was also in the vehicle, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
According to authorities, 30-year-old Joneaka Smooth, the suspected driver, was fleeing from police after a shoplifting incident. Smooth allegedly drove erratically, crossing medians and lanes before striking the victims’ car. She later turned herself in and now faces charges including manslaughter and fleeing police. Police continue to search for two other suspects involved in the incident.
Family and friends gathered for a vigil at the crash site, holding candles and releasing pink and blue balloons to honor the teens. “They were so full of promise and love,” said a relative. Giselle Smith, who had dreams of pursuing a nursing career, and Semaj Morris, known for his kindness and bright smile, were both seniors at West Jefferson High School.
Community leaders expressed frustration over the tragedy. “These senseless losses are preventable,” said a local official, calling for revised police pursuit protocols to prioritize public safety.
Authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the community has launched fundraising efforts to support the victims’ families during this difficult time.
