French authorities have arrested two people in connection with last weekend’s jewel heist at the Louvre Museum, as reported by TMZ.
According to Le Parisien, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced Sunday that the arrests were made Saturday night by the city’s elite anti-gang unit. One of the suspects was reportedly detained at Roissy Airport while trying to leave the country.
Officials said more than 100 investigators have been working on the case as police rush to track down the stolen jewels and identify everyone involved.
The theft happened last Sunday inside the museum’s Apollo Gallery. Investigators said the suspects used a basket lift to climb the outside of the building, broke through a window, smashed open display cases, and escaped with crown jewels valued at about $102 million.
The entire heist lasted less than eight minutes. The Louvre’s director called the incident a
“terrible failure,”
and the museum was closed shortly after the robbery.
Prosecutors said the investigation remains ongoing.
