A Black man in Ohio received a concussion after being on the receiving end of a cop’s flying karate kick to his head.
Jaemiier McElroy is seen on newly released bodycam video kneeling on the ground, with his hands up listening to cops demands. However, a white officer Brandon Momirov, still assaulted the man who had to be hospitalized, according to his attorney.
According to video, officers yelled, “Get on the ground!”
“On your knees!”
“Right now!” the officers demand to the men being arrested.
Then Momirov reportedly runs up from behind fellow officers and kicks McElroy in the head.
However, Canton Police Chief John Gabbard took sides with the officer saying that the “stressful” job justifies such force.
“Our officers frequently face stressful, dangerous situations and confrontations with armed suspects.”
“Their dedication to the community has resulted in exceptional reductions in violence, especially gun violence, over the past two years,” Gabbard said in a statement to the media.
Bobby DiCello, McElroy’s attorney, pushed back on that claim. “There’s a group of people in Canton that are law enforcement officers who are treating ordinary civilians like enemy combatants,” attorney Bobby DiCello told NBC News.
DiCello is reportedly defending at least six cases against the police force from victims who claim they were assaulted by officers and three victims died.
“If this was in another context, you’d say that’s a crime spree,” DiCello said.
McElroy was charged with obstructing official business and resisting arrest, despite the video showing that he was not resisting arrest.
