Elaine Perez-Pena had just returned from Sao Paulo, Brazil, with Newark as her final destination. However, her trip was interrupted by a stopover at Chicago O’Hare Airport. According to a criminal complaint obtained by People, the plane passenger put herself in a wheelchair and later complained about her legs hurting and her needing to use the restroom.
But neither the sight of the wheelchair nor her excuses bought her the time she wanted. The officials at the airport subjected her and her belongings to strict searches due to her history. Back in 2022, Perez-Pena was found with over 500 grams of cocaine with intent to distribute.
She was convicted and slapped with a sentence of two years under supervision. That same year, the suspect transported 2.89 kilograms of cocaine-positive substance. More recently on January 25, the suspect was thoroughly searched and was found with 14 bags of white substance hidden inside her wheelchair.
Although the authorities had cleared her other luggage, when it was time to check the wheelchair, it appeared newer and the cushion had gained some density. Eventually, a narcotic canine flagged down the wheelchair which was ripped apart.
The authorities claimed that the package was worth roughly about $238,000. Following her arrest, Elaine Perez-Pena was spotted pacing back and forth in her cell— revealing that she never needed the wheelchair.
She was probably pacing her cell thinking of the next tactic to deploy. Never say never!
