42-year-old Melanie Biggins of Missouri was sentenced to 10 years in behind bars for killing her husband, Ettienne L. McEwan. She admitted to the crime, saying she couldn’t afford a divorce. Biggins pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the August 31, 2022, incident, according to online court records, PEOPLE reported.
When the woman was initially apprehended on Aug. 31, 2022, she faced first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges. In a plea deal, she pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter to avoid life in prison.
At around 1 a.m. on Aug. 31, 2022, Biggins contacted 911, claiming an intruder shot her husband, McEwan, while they slept. Officers found her giving him CPR in bed. Biggins told officials she woke up to a gunshot and saw McEwan shot under his chin. She claimed the front door was open, but she didn’t see anyone; however, it was all a lie.
Biggins’ story fell apart when police questioned her. She initially claimed her husband’s rifle was the only weapon, but later confessed to buying a gun from a pawn shop. Officers found bullet holes in a pillow and a .38 Special handgun under a bunk bed. She also confessed to having an affair and wanting a divorce but lacked the funds to do so.
