38-year-old Krystena Murray, a single woman from Savannah, Georgia welcomed a baby on December 29, 2023. However, when she saw the child, she realized something was wrong. According to her lawsuit, she had chosen a sperm donor with a similar complexion to hers. But the baby was clearly of African American descent, raising immediate concerns about a possible embryo mix-up.
Although Murray had no issue with the baby’s race, she was devastated to learn that the child was not biologically hers. “This has destroyed me,” she said, describing the heartbreak caused by the medical mistake. According to AP, she no longer has custody of the baby.
Murray had sought help from #CoastalFertility to conceive via a sperm donor. The lawsuit alleges that in May 2023, the clinic mistakenly implanted an embryo belonging to another couple. This resulted in her pregnancy. The mix-up was confirmed through a home DNA test in January 2024.
By March, the clinic reportedly acknowledged the error, and the biological parents sued for custody. To avoid further distress for the child, Murray voluntarily relinquished custody in May 2024.
Coastal Fertility Specialists, in response, stated that this was the first case in its 15-year history and that no other patients had been affected. They expressed regret over the mistake and conducted a thorough review, introducing additional safeguards to prevent future errors.
At a press conference, Krystena Murray explained her decision to go public with her lawsuit, hoping to prompt stricter regulations for fertility clinics. Her attorney, Adam Wolf, noted that IVF errors are not uncommon and called for mandatory oversight and improved safety measures.
Despite her painful experience, Murray still hopes to become a mother in the future, though she has no plans to undergo IVF again.
