A Florida mother, Rachiel Moore, has been convicted of premeditated murder and tampering with evidence in the 2023 killing of Colby Vinson, the father of her child.

Moore, 27, was sentenced to life in prison without parole after authorities revealed she had orchestrated the murder with her former stepfather, Jason L. Curtis, following a custody battle.

According to Florida State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden, Moore encouraged Curtis to kill Vinson after he secured a 50/50 custody arrangement for their daughter. Vinson, 24, was shot and killed outside his home in Santa Rosa County while unloading groceries, per PEOPLE.

Police reports indicated that Moore had communicated extensively with Curtis, providing him with personal details about Vinson to assist in locating and killing him. She even paid Curtis $50 for gas to travel from Alabama.

The investigation revealed that Moore initially downplayed the seriousness of the situation. Reportedly, Curtis didn’t believe he would follow through with the plan.

Despite her efforts to delete evidence, police found incriminating messages between Rachiel Moore and Curtis. At the crime scene, deputies discovered Moore’s 4-year-old daughter next to Vinson’s body.

Curtis, also sentenced to life, is serving his sentence from last year. The case highlights the tragic consequences of custody disputes.
