A woman in Florida, 63-year-old Elena Grady, was taken into custody for leaving her 2-year-old grandchild alone in a hot car while she went shopping at Publix. The woman was charged with neglect of a child causing bodily harm. She was later released on Wednesday after posting a $3,000 bond, per Fox News.
Officials were called to the Publix store in Ormond Beach after store managers discovered a minor alone in a hot vehicle. The child seemed tired and the car was parked in the sun with cracked windows. Luckily, a manager unlocked the car by putting their hand into the car through the cracked window. The child was then brought inside the store to cool down. Grady later came into the store and took custody of the child.
“[Grady] left Publix but was later located by deputies who also checked on the child and found her to be in good health,”
according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office reported that the toddler was left in the car when it was 91 degrees outside, with a heat index of 101 degrees. They also found out that the child was alone in the vehicle for approximately 16 minutes.
