8th Annual Black Music Honors Celebrate Trailblazers Missy Elliot, SWV, Jeffrey Osborne, and more

The 8th Annual Black Music Honors, co-hosted by actor/comedian DeRay Davis and actress/singer LeToya Luckett, celebrates legendary African-American artists who have impacted and made remarkable musical contributions to African-American music as well as American music worldwide. The blue carpet experience featured star-studded appearances from SWV, Anthony Hamilton, David Banner, Roxanne Shanté, Sevyn Streeter, LeToya Luckett, and many more. Each artist showed off their elegant drapings as they all appeared to be excited for the anticipated ceremony.

This year’s ceremony honored Hip-Hop icon Missy Elliot with the Music Innovator Icon award for her influential contributions to the genre. SWV was celebrated with the Urban Music Icon award. The R&B Music Icon award was presented to singer-songwriter Evelyn “Champagne” King. R&B/Soul artist Jeffrey Osborne received the Legends Award and gospel trailblazers The Hawkins Family went home with the Gospel Music Icon award.

Hamilton discussed what he anticipated the most from the event. The Best of Me singer revealed that he was most excited about African Americans uniting to promote positivity. When asked what he is most looking forward to from the ceremony, he responded,

“just us coming together in a positive light and loving on each other. The honorees and the people that we’re celebrating have done so much for the culture, Missy and SWV, and Jeffrey Osborne, so I’m just  happy to be a part of that.”

Many talents who graced the blue carpet discussed their enthusiasm to witness honoree’s like SWV, Missy Elliot, The Hawkins Family, and others get their flowers.

“I’m going to say it 10 times tonight, I have to see Missy Elliot live doing her thing. I’ve grown up with her, I’ve grown up with Hip-Hop. Music itself is just my life, I was in music before acting so this means so much to me,”

    said actress Brely Evans

Hip-Hop legend Roxanne Shanté also expressed her excitement for the ceremony. She confessed that she is looking forward to seeing Missy Elliot being honored. She went on to say that it’s important for women in Hip-Hop to be recognized especially with hip-hop turning 50 years old this year.

“I am most looking forward to my Hip-Hop sister receiving her flowers while she’s still here so I’m definitely here to support her. I’m here to see everyone but mainly that is my main focus right there because, you know, celebrating 50 years of hip hop, one of the main things we want to do is be able to show how much support we have for each other especially women,”

    said the Roxanne’s Revenge rapper.

Honoree’s SWV admitted that they’re fans of everyone who is set to receive their flowers at the ceremony. Group member Lelee said,

“We’re fans of everybody that’s being recognized tonight so we’re happy we get to be a fan tonight.”

The Black Music Honors is scheduled to premiere on June 3 on the Stellar Network.

A Mother-Daughter Duo ended up with matching beatdowns after attempting to confront students at a Texas high school. The mother allegedly went to the school with her daughter to confront a group of girls after an altercation between her daughter and other students, after barging into an administrator’s office, both the mother and daughter end up getting beat up, resulting in their mother getting jumped by a group of students and her daughter dragged on the floor. It seems there was no security on the scene, and it appeared that only one teenage boy attempted to break up the fight.
