A Texas man, Miguel Alejandro Pastran Hernandez, 23, kidnapped a ride-share driver at gunpoint, forcing him to drive over 1,000 miles to South Florida. This incident happened Friday night when Hernandez requested a ride from a closed gas station near Arlington, Texas. Federal authorities reported that during the journey, the driver was threatened with a firearm. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida is handling the case, according to NBC News.
At the location where Hernandez was picked up,
“[He] pulled out a gun and the victim heard a round being chambered in the firearm,”
prosecutors said.
The statement continued,
“Pastran Hernandez threatened to tie up and put the driver in the back of the vehicle…. Pastran Hernandez then ordered the victim to drive to Florida, through multiple states.”
The victim drove until Saturday morning and as they drove through Lousiana, Hernandez forced the driver to call their children to inform them they were on a long work trip, according to an affidavit.
Hernandez and the driver reached Florida on Saturday night. On Sunday, they went to Miami Beach, where Hernandez targeted another victim. Luckily, the driver escaped during a store stop, leading to Hernandez’s arrest. Reports noted that the victim was forced to go into the store to buy supplies for Hernandez for another kidnapping.
The 23-year-old planned to kidnap another person for a $3 million ransom. He faced federal charges in court for kidnapping, carjacking, and firearm possession, and was ordered to be detained.
