11 Members Of Amish Family, Including A 1-Year-Old, Hospitalized After Consuming ‘Toxic Mushrooms,’ Reports Say

Eleven members of an Amish family in Pennsylvania, including a 1-year-old, were taken to the hospital after eating toxic mushrooms they found in the wild, as reported by CNN

A family member from Peach Bottom Township told local authorities they got sick after someone brought the mushrooms home for dinner. Since the family doesn’t have a phone, the person who reported the illness had to walk about half a mile to a telephone booth to call 911, according to Gregory Fantom, a spokesperson for the Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company.

The group consisted of a man, a woman, and their nine children, aged 1 to 39, according to Fantom.

“It was wild mushrooms, but the hospital would have to confirm the type,”

Southern York County emergency medical services Chief Laura Taylor told CNN.

The fire department and EMS responded to the family on Friday night after they were informed that the 11 members had eaten toxic mushrooms and were sick. They were taken to WellSpan York Hospital, where all 11 were treated and released later that night, according to CNN affiliate WHP.
