  • Driver Hits Rideshare With Mother and 3 Children Inside Then Hits Mom and 3 Children Crossing The Street

Driver Hits Rideshare With Mother and 3 Children Inside Then Hits Mom and 3 Children Crossing The Street

A mother and her two children died, while a third child was hospitalized following a two-car crash on Ocean Parkway Saturday, according to officials, per Fox5. The accident involved a driver hitting a rideshare vehicle with a mother and her three children inside and then another mother with her three children as they crossed the street.

Officials said that a 2023 silver Toyota Camry with TLC plates was heading west and tried to turn right onto northbound Ocean Parkway. During the turn, it was struck by a blue Audi A3, which then hit a mother and her children.

Sadly, the mother and two of her children who were crossing the street were declared dead at the scene. The third child was quickly transported to the hospital and is in critical condition.

The driver of the Audi, 32-year-old Miriam Yarimi, was hospitalized in stable condition following the accident. Officials discovered she was driving with a suspended license and are investigating the reason behind it. The 62-year-old man driving the Toyota Camry was also hospitalized, but in stable condition. His four passengers, including a mother and her three children, suffered minor injuries and were treated at the hospital.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch mentioned that speed might have played a role in the incident; however, the investigation just started. Officials are also investigating if the Audi went through a red light during the crash.

  • Tattoo Artist Receives Backlash For Tattooing 9-Year-Old Girl Who Wanted Trump Tattoo On Her Neck, Advised Her To Get American Flag Instead

Tattoo Artist Receives Backlash For Tattooing 9-Year-Old Girl Who Wanted Trump Tattoo On Her Neck, Advised Her To Get American Flag Instead

A tattoo artist in Arizona is facing backlash for tattooing a 9-year-old girl with an American flag, as reported by the NY Post. He claims he was actually trying to help and does not support children getting tattoos.

The co-owner of Black Onyx Empire Tattoo, known as Sosa, took to Instagram to defend his actions. He claims that the girl came into his Yuma shop last May with her sister and parents, requesting a tattoo of President-elect Donald Trump on her neck. In Arizona, minors can get tattoos as long as their parents give consent.

Sosa mentioned that he attempted to discourage the girl and her family from making such a permanent choice by quoting them a price of $500 for what would typically cost $80.

Despite his efforts, the family was adamant, and Sosa convinced them to opt for an American flag tattoo on her arm instead of the Trump neck tattoo.

Since sharing the story, Sosa claims he has been receiving

    “threats”

    and

    “hate comments,”

but he maintains that he was acting with the girl’s best interests in mind.

“She was going to get it done regardless. She said it didn’t matter if I did it or someone else did it, she was going to get it done,”

    he told The Post.

“Do I think it’s right? No,”

Sosa said, mentioning that he has never tattooed a child before and believes that the law should prohibit it.

  • NYC Sues Companies Accused Of Using Candy-Flavored Vapes To Attract Child Consumers

NYC Sues Companies Accused Of Using Candy-Flavored Vapes To Attract Child Consumers

New York City is filing another lawsuit to put a stop to companies selling illegal flavored vapes to kids, as reported by the NY Post. Mayor Eric Adams said during a public safety briefing in City Hall.

“Price Point’s greed has been pushing nicotine on our kids for too long and today we say no more.”

The latest lawsuit is against Price Point Distributors Inc., a company based out of

Long Island. Its goal is to stop the company from selling their products and also demands an unspecified amount of money for damages and fines.

“We will not sit idly by as they continue to harm our kids, and we will not tolerate crime and disorder of this magnitude, which includes illegal sales of drugs, vapes, and other illegal cannabis products.”

After recognizing the risks of this addictive product, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a law in 2020 to ban the sale of flavored vaping products in all five boroughs. In July 2023, the Adams administration filed a federal lawsuit against four big distributors, and in April 2024, they announced a second lawsuit against 11 local wholesalers. Both cases are still ongoing.

“By selling disposable vapes with kid-friendly flavors — such as cotton candy, raspberry watermelon, and cherry cola — defendants are putting profit before the wellbeing of young people,”

the city’s acting corporation counsel, Muriel Goode-Trufant pointed out.

Adams mentioned that they working closely with the city Department of Education to tackle this problem. Mark Rampersant, the Security Director of the DOE, said that they have nearly 300 counselors helping students who are addicted to these products and plan to actively educate young people about the dangers.

“We’re also providing counseling, support services, and counseling to our parents as well,”

    Rampersant said.

According to The National Youth Tobacco Survey,

“e-cigarettes remain the ‘most popular products’ among teenagers.”

  • 10-Year-Old Boy Arrested For Allegedly Driving Stolen Car Around Playground Full Of Children, Police Say This Isn’t His First Arrest

10-Year-Old Boy Arrested For Allegedly Driving Stolen Car Around Playground Full Of Children, Police Say This Isn’t His First Arrest

A 10-year-old boy has been arrested for driving a stolen car near a playground in Minnesota where kids were playing, per Law & Crime. Minneapolis police shared the news of the boy’s arrest on Friday.

“The boy was booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center on Thursday for probable cause 2nd degree assault,”

police said in a statement. The incident took place on Sept. 20 at Nellie Stone Johnson School in north Minneapolis. Police revealed that no one was hurt and that

“no children on the playground were struck by the driver.”

The suspect in question, whose name has not been released due to his age, has reportedly had several run-ins with the law.

“Police records indicate that the 10-year-old boy has at least 30 entries dating back to May 2023,”

    the statement said.

“He has been arrested at least twice before for auto theft related crimes.”

He is also listed as a suspect

“in more than 12 cases that range from auto theft to robbery to assault with a dangerous weapon,”

    as well as

    “runaway type cases,”

the statement says. Surveillance footage from the Minneapolis police shows the stolen car driving on the grass and sidewalk around the playground. It drove by where kids were playing on slides, benches, and climbing equipment three times. School staff can be seen trying to get the children to safety, and a young girl almost stepped into the car’s path but stopped just in time.

    The boy’s family

“is cooperative with police and have asked for help to keep their son or anyone else from being injured or killed,”

according to police chief Brian O’Hara.

“It is unfathomable that a 10-year-old boy has been involved in this level of criminal activity without effective intervention,”

    O’Hara said in the statement.

“Prison is not an acceptable option for a 10-year-old boy. But the adults who can stop this behavior going forward must act now to help this child and his family.”

  • Largest Housing Provider For Unaccompanied Migrant Children Sued For Allegedly Raping and Sexually Abusing Kids In Their Care

Largest Housing Provider For Unaccompanied Migrant Children Sued For Allegedly Raping and Sexually Abusing Kids In Their Care

Department of Justice has accused the largest housing provider for unaccompanied migrant children of engaging in

    “severe, pervasive”

sexual abuse and harassment of the children under its care, per the NY Post

According to a lawsuit filed by the DOJ, Southwest Key employees, including supervisors, have allegedly committed acts of

“rape, sexual touching, and solicitation of sex and nude images from the children”

since 2015. The lawsuit also mentions that at least two employees have been charged since 2020.

One disturbing allegation involves the repeated abuse of a 5-year-old child at a Southwest Key shelter in El Paso. In another instance, a youth care worker at a Tucson shelter allegedly took an 11-year-old boy to a hotel and paid him to perform sexual acts. The lawsuit further states that the children were threatened with violence against themselves or their families if they reported the abuse.

Additionally, testimony from the victims suggests that some staff members were aware of the ongoing abuse but either failed to report it or actively concealed it.

On its website, Southwest Key said it has been a significant partner in the U.S. response to address the immigration crisis at our southern border for over 20 years,

“sheltering immigrant children under 18 years of age who arrive in this country without a parent or guardian. SWK works to reunify them with a parent, relative, or sponsor.”

According to the lawsuit filed by the DOJ, Southwest Key is responsible for the care of children between the ages of 5 and 18. Southwest Key operates a total of 29 shelters for child migrants, with 17 located in Texas, 10 in Arizona, and two in California. The organization states that most of the children in their care are aged 13 to 17 from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

“During the brief amount of time they are with us, we seek to provide refuge and care to assist in their future success,”

    the company said.

  • 9-Year-Old Oklahoma Boy Accused Of Harassing and Stalking Classmate, Served With Victim Protective Order At Elementary School

9-Year-Old Oklahoma Boy Accused Of Harassing and Stalking Classmate, Served With Victim Protective Order At Elementary School

A 9-year-old boy from Oklahoma received a victim protective order (VPO) at school after reportedly stalking and harassing a female classmate for several months, reports the NY Post

Undersheriff for Pottawatomi County, Travis Dinwiddie, delivered the order to the student at Horace Mann Elementary School on Wednesday morning, following approval by Judge Tracy McDaniel. The girl’s mother, Elsy Goggin, had filed the petition for the order.

“We served it there because that was the address that was put on the petition by the court… It’s ordered by the courts. And so we have to serve that as officers of the court,”

    Dinwiddie told the outlet.

Before serving the boy at school, the sheriff’s office made sure to inform his family about the situation.

“I’m just shocked because he’s nine years old being served by sheriffs at school,”

Lavonne McCoy, grandmother of the 9-year-old boy, told the outlet.

“I’ve seen her at the store, and she always runs after him playing. And he tries to hide because, you know, he’s nine… I’m not sure why he’s getting in trouble for just being a child because there is nothing on here that says any type of abuse,”

McCoy said. McCoy described the children’s interactions as

“children being children, running around playing.”

However, according to the girl’s mother, Elsy Goggin, the boy has been violent towards her daughter. Goggin told the outlet that she made several attempts to resolve the issue before filing.

“I had to go to this point where I said, enough is enough,”

    Goggin told the outlet.

After being served, the child was sent home. He is to appear in court on April 24, according to the outlet.

In a statement provided to the outlet, Horace Mann Elementary School’s superintendent Dr. Aaron Espolt said,

“We will always cooperate with our law enforcement officials and will work with families to ensure the highest safety standards and protocols are followed.”

  • Nurturing Your Child’s Mental Health as the School Year Begins

Nurturing Your Child’s Mental Health as the School Year Begins

With the return to school comes new challenges for children’s mental health. Research shows that a supportive environment and proactive strategies can significantly impact their emotional well-being. Here are evidence-based approaches to help foster your child’s mental health as they transition back to the classroom.

    1. Open Communication:

Studies published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies emphasize the importance of open, honest communication with your child. Create a safe space for them to express their thoughts and emotions. Actively listen and validate their feelings, helping them feel understood and supported.

    2. Establish Routine and Structure:

Clinical research, including studies cited in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, highlights the benefits of routine for children’s mental health. Establishing consistent schedules provides a sense of predictability and stability, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of security.

    3. Encourage Physical Activity:

Physical activity has a profound impact on mental well-being. Research published in the Journal of Pediatrics demonstrates that regular exercise can improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in children. Encourage outdoor play, sports, or family activities to promote both physical and mental health.

    4. Foster Social Connections:

Studies in the journal JAMA Pediatrics emphasize the significance of social connections for children’s mental health. Encourage opportunities for social interaction, whether through playdates, extracurricular activities, or school events. Meaningful relationships provide emotional support and a sense of belonging.

    5. Teach Coping Strategies:

Clinical studies, including research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, highlight the effectiveness of teaching children coping skills. Equip them with healthy ways to manage stress, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness techniques, or journaling.

    6. Monitor Screen Time:

Excessive screen time can impact children’s mental health. Research in JAMA Pediatrics suggests a link between extended screen time and increased risk of emotional and behavioral difficulties. Set limits on screen usage and encourage alternative activities that promote mental well-being.

    7. Be Mindful of Academic Pressure:

Strive for a balanced approach to academics. Research published in the Journal of School Psychology highlights the potential negative impact of excessive academic pressure on children’s mental health. Encourage effort and progress rather than perfection.

As the school year begins, prioritizing your child’s mental health is paramount. Utilize evidence-based strategies like open communication, establishing routine, promoting physical activity, fostering social connections, teaching coping skills, monitoring screen time, and being mindful of academic pressure. By creating a supportive environment, you can empower your child to navigate the challenges of the school year with resilience and emotional well-being.

  • Nigeria Not Doing Enough to Tackle Child Malnutrition Says UNICEF

Nigeria Not Doing Enough to Tackle Child Malnutrition Says UNICEF

According To Arise News, The United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) has said its findings showed that federal and state governments were not budgeting enough funds that would adequately address growing cases of malnutrition amongst children in Nigeria. It said four states Kano, Borno, Katsina and Lagos – were presently ranked highest in the food insecurity ladder. The UN agency said better funding was needed to help carry out sensitization and advocacy campaigns in remote areas as well as provide for succor for children facing severe malnutrition in the country.

Speaking on Wednesday, at the opening of a two-day Workshop on Media Dialogue on Nutrition Financing in Nigeria, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the UNICEF Communication Specialist, Mr. Geoffrey Njoku, said the dialogue was intended to identify funding gaps in national and budgets for addressing issues of child malnutrition and how to fill the gaps. UNICEF Nutrition Officer, Nkeiru Enwelum, who delivered a paper on,

“Nutrition situation in Nigeria, An Overview of malnutrition in Nigeria and its impact on children,” said that currently about 35 million in Nigeria were malnourished.“

“About 35 million of under five children in Nigeria and out of this we have 12 million of them malnourished. And we have about three million that was wasted in Nigeria,” she said.

She added some of the diseases or resultant body malfunction arising from malnutrition were known as micro nutrient deficiency, anemia, rickett, vitamin A deficiency (xerophamia). Enwelum, also gave an assessment of progress being made on interventions in the health sector, saying exclusive breastfeeding was perhaps the only aspect of the SDGs that Nigeria was making progress and may likely meet the target by 2030.
