Alaska Mother Charged for Allegedly Leaving Toddler in Freezing Car to Go to ‘Romantic Rendezvous’ at Hotel

A mother in Alaska has been charged after reportedly leaving her child alone in a vehicle while she had a “romantic rendezvous” at a hotel, as reported by PEOPLE

According to a news release from the Alaska Department of Public Safety State Troopers division, 38-year-old Lillian Johnson was arrested on a first-degree charge of endangering the welfare of a child. On Tuesday, March 18, dispatchers received a call from a worried citizen. They reported hearing a child crying in a parked car. When troopers arrived, they discovered a 20-month-old child “abandoned in a car” outside a local hotel and bar in Healy, Alaska, as stated in the release.

“The child was crying, the vehicle was off, with a window partly opened with outside temperatures at 6 degrees Fahrenheit,” state troopers said. EMS personnel were called to the scene, where they “removed the child from the vehicle” and provided treatment for “hypothermia.” The child was then taken by medics to “the EMS/Fire Department for additional treatment,” per the release. “The child was treated for early stages of hypothermia,” state troopers said.

Authorities Launched Investigation into the Incident

Officials reported that the child’s mother was not “immediately found” when the toddler was taken for further medical care. However, she “exited the hotel after EMS had already left with her child.” Alaska State Troopers launched an investigation into the incident and obtained hotel security footage from that evening. The footage reportedly shows that Johnson was inside the hotel for around 35 minutes, from approximately 8:18 p.m. to 8:53 p.m., “before returning to check on the child” and discovering that the 20-month-old was no longer there.

Investigators said their investigation revealed that Johnson had “left her child in the car to have a romantic rendezvous with a guest at the hotel.” No further details have been provided.

Justin Bieber Admits to Having ‘Anger Issues’ and Says He Occasionally ‘Hates’ Himself in Cryptic Instagram Posts

Justin Bieber shared his struggles with having “anger issues” and his dislike of himself whenever he feels “inauthentic,” in an Instagram post on Saturday.

The pop star uploaded a collection of mysterious messages to his social media, accompanied by images of himself and a video of him playing instruments with a band. “I got anger issues too, but I wanna grow and not react so much smh,” the 31-year-old wrote, adding a facepalm emoji to the caption. The caption was accompanied by three photos, one showing him with his face down in a hoodie, another of him as a child, and a third featuring cargo shipping containers along with a small image that seems to be of his son, Jack Blues.

Later that Saturday, the “Sorry” singer shared a video of himself making music with a band. In the caption, he wrote, “I think I hate myself sometimes when I feel myself start to become inauthentic.” He added, “Then I remember we’re all being made to think we’re not enough but I still hate when I change myself to please people.”

The posts follow increasing public concern for the singer’s mental and physical well-being, although many have commended him for being vulnerable. Earlier this month, Bieber acknowledged on Instagram that he has “always felt unworthy” despite the immense love and admiration from his fans. Just the week prior, he shared, “We have nothing to prove today just the gift of life today to accept and receive. Nothing is owed to us and we don’t owe anyone anything.” His rep previously shut down rumors that the singer was using any form of drugs, calling the accusations “harmful.”

  • Gen Z On Track To Becoming the Wealthiest Generation by Around 2035, New Study Predicts

Gen Z On Track To Becoming the Wealthiest Generation by Around 2035, New Study Predicts

A recent study indicates that Generation Z is on track to becoming the wealthiest generation in history, according to PEOPLE.

Defined as those born between 1997 and 2012, Gen Z is expected to accumulate around $36 trillion within the next five years and over $74 trillion by about 2040, as highlighted in a recent report from Bank of America researchers. The report attributes this wealth surge to Baby Boomers, who are anticipated to facilitate a “huge transfer of wealth” by passing down their assets to younger generations in the years ahead.

This also suggests that Gen Z is likely to significantly influence global spending trends.

“It’s likely they will be among the most disruptive generations to economies, markets and social systems,” the researchers predict. In the meantime, the authors of the study point out that Generation Z continues to encounter financial and economic hurdles. On average, they spend “twice as much” as they save, due to the high cost of living.

    Societal Advantages & Disadvantages

While a greater number of Gen Z individuals hold both two-year and four-year degrees compared to Millennials and Generation X at the same age, many find themselves underemployed due to a tough job market. Furthermore, nearly a third of Gen Z respondents expressed feeling “behind” where there parents were at the same age regarding financial goals, according to the bank’s 2024 Better Money Habits survey.

While speaking to the New York Post, financial literacy expert Amanda Frances urged Generation Z to focus on becoming “investors” instead of just consumers. Highlighting that investing early can lead to “massive wealth later.” Frances also pointed out to the Post that Gen Z has a distinct advantage that older generations lack. “Their digital fluency gives them unprecedented access to wealth-building opportunities through fintech, e-commerce, content creation, and AI-driven businesses,” she explained.

  • Woman Sentenced for Stabbing, Burning, and Forcing Boy to Consume Feces in Distributing Abuse Case, ‘Do it All Again in a Heartbeat’

Woman Sentenced for Stabbing, Burning, and Forcing Boy to Consume Feces in Distributing Abuse Case, ‘Do it All Again in a Heartbeat’

A New Zealand woman faces prison time for allegedly torturing a young boy. Selica Romana Wright, 34, is accused of stabbing the teenager with a chef’s knife and a screwdriver, making him eat feces, pouring boiling water on him, and urging him to take his own life, as reported by the New Zealand Herald

Wright appeared in front of Judge Kirsten Lummis at the Auckland District Court, presenting a letter of apology. However, prosecutors used her own words from intercepted prison letters to reveal that she showed no remorse for her actions. “Haha. Do it all again in a heartbeat,” she wrote. “No regrets for me, only that I didn’t do it properly. LOL.”

The judge sentenced her to 10 and a half years in prison, with the requirement that she serve at least half of that time before becoming eligible for parole. The Glen Eden resident was arrested in October 2023. The teenager was able to escape to a neighbor’s house to seek help. Court documents indicate that the abuse occurred over a 10-month period.

    Horrifying Details of Victims Abuse

Wright would abuse the victim whenever she faced “problems with her private life”, or became angry. In one instance, she reportedly struck him with a metal vacuum cleaner pipe, hitting him with such force that the pipe got damaged. Additionally, she used a hammer on him at least five times. “[He] was struck about the head, body, legs, knees, feet, back, arms and his hands,” court documents state.

On two separate occasions, Wright attacked him with a sword and a spade. In the month leading up to her arrest, she told the boy he should hang himself, and when he refused, she threatened to hang him herself. On October 22, 2023, he managed to escape to a neighbor’s home to ask for help after Wright had left to run errands. Wright pleaded guilty last year to several charges. Medical professionals discovered seven fractures in various areas of the teen’s body, along with severe bruising, cuts, burns, and puncture wounds.

  • HOA Sells Woman’s Home Over One Late Payment of $400, ‘I Don’t Wish This on Anyone

HOA Sells Woman’s Home Over One Late Payment of $400, ‘I Don’t Wish This on Anyone

A Union County woman claims that a disagreement with her Homeowners Association (HOA) over a few hundred dollars in unpaid dues led to her family losing their home, per The Sun. Taylor Sanders was residing in Weddington Hills in 2020 and acknowledges that she owed the HOA money. According to HOA records, her outstanding balance was $400.

“They said it hadn’t been paid for a year,” she explained. The HOA sent her several letters regarding the dues, but she told Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke that she never received them. The situation escalated from there. In February 2021, the board placed a lien on her property, and by April, she received a letter stating that her debt had accrued to around $1,200 and that they were moving forward with foreclosure proceedings. “I thought it was a joke,” she said.

County records indicate that her 3,300-square-foot home was sold for $49,000. Records reveal that the individual who purchased the house resold it five months later for $850,000. “Oh my God. It’s devastating for my children,” she said. “I don’t wish this on anyone.” Sanders is now determined to educate other homeowners about the risks of neglecting HOA correspondence.

Under current North Carolina law, HOAs are permitted to place a lien on a property if a homeowner does not pay their dues and fees. If the payments are still outstanding, the HOA can begin foreclosure proceedings. Homeowners who disagree with HOA’s decision have the option to appeal to the board or advocate for a vote to modify the rules. North Carolina lawmakers are currently evaluating a bill aimed at preventing such drastic measures.

White Couple Sentenced to Life in Prison for Forcing Their Black Adopted Children to Work as ‘Slaves’

A white couple from West Virginia was sentenced this week to life in prison for the abuse of their Black adopted child, whom they allegedly made perform heavy labor like “slaves,” as reported by PEOPLE

Donald Lantz, 62, received a sentence of 160 years after being found guilty of forced labor, human trafficking, and child abuse and neglect, as reported by the New York Times. His wife, Jeanne Kay Whitefeather, 63, was sentenced to 215 years after being convicted of the same offenses, along with violating her children’s civil rights. The couple was found guilty in January.

“You brought these children to West Virginia, a place that I know is ‘almost heaven,’ and you put them in hell,” Eighth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Maryclaire Akers said during sentencing, per WCHS. “This court will now put you in yours. And may God have mercy on your souls, because this court will not.”

    Couple Taken into Custody

The couple adopted five children in 2018 and later relocated to Kanawha County in May 2023, according to prosecutors. They were arrested in October 2023 after a neighbor alerted Child Protective Services, claiming that two teenagers, ages 14 and 16, were locked in a shed at the couple’s home in Sissonville, based on court documents obtained by WCHS-TV. Additional neighbors also reported that the children were “forced to perform farm labor and were not permitted inside the residence,” per the documents.

When deputies arrived at the residence, they discovered the children living in a shed that contained only a portable toilet and lacked running water, as stated in an indictment referenced by West Virginia MetroNews. The children were dressed in filthy clothes, and the oldest boy had what looked like sores on his feet, according to AP News. During the trial, the oldest daughter testified that the children were frequently cursed at, and some were forced to stand in their rooms for hours with their hands on their heads, according to the AP.

  • ‘Bachelor’ Star Sean Lowe Attacked by His Dog Twice in 12-Hour Span, Says ‘I Was Fighting for My Life’

‘Bachelor’ Star Sean Lowe Attacked by His Dog Twice in 12-Hour Span, Says ‘I Was Fighting for My Life’

Former “The Bachelor” star Sean Lowe revealed on Monday that he was bitten by his dog on two different occasions within 12 hours, as reported by PEOPLE. The 41-year-old shared this alarming news about his recently adopted dog, Moose.

    Lowe Details the Horrifying Attack

In an Instagram video posted to his account on Monday, Lowe recounted the terrifying experience. “On Thursday, I was having some friends of mine over to barbecue. Catherine took the kids to the mall, and we’re just barbecuing here on my patio…some of the smoke from the barbecue started to drift inside, and our smoke alarm started going off.”

“So I grab a dish rag and I’m going over to waft the smoke away from the smoke alarm….” Lowe recalled. “And as I’m holding the dish rag, Moose comes up and, like, bites it and kind of nips my finger really aggressively, which is something that he does not do. So, you know, I kind of gave him a, ‘No Moose.’”

He went on, “At this point again, there’s so much chaos going on with the alarm going off, I give him like a very stern like, ‘Moose. No. No.’ And it was right about that moment where he shows his teeth at me and just attacks me, and I don’t mean like bite and run off like a lot of dogs do when they’re scared or defensive. I mean, attacks me, and I feel him just kind of ripping into the flesh of my arm. And at this point, I am doing everything I possibly can just to fend this dog off.”

While he mentioned that he was “bleeding badly,” he managed to get Moose into his backyard. “He comes back through the door and attacks me for a second time…I honestly just felt like I am fighting for my life here against a dog,” he remembered. Lowe needed several stitches for his injuries. Once he got home, he planned to call animal control. He also was going to call the adoption agency where he and his wife got Moose. However, before he could do that, the dog attacked him again. Moose was taken away by authorities and Lowe had to return to the ER to get more stitches.

Four individuals are accused of stealing three valuable homes in Queens, New York, through a fraudulent deed scheme, according to prosecutors per the NY Post.

Autumn Valeri, 41, a real estate agent from Commack, New York, who maintains a lavish presence on Instagram, along with her accomplices, allegedly forged signatures and submitted false documents to the City Register’s office two years ago. They are accused of unlawfully acquiring properties valued at over $3 million, stated Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.

    Elderly Homeowners Targeted by Criminals

Carl Avinger, 42, and Lawrence T. Ray, 38, both from Queens, along with Torey Guice of Roselle, New Jersey, surrendered to authorities on Tuesday. A grand jury has issued a 47-count indictment outlining their extensive crimes, which include charges of grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, conspiracy, identify theft, falsifying business records, and other offenses, the DA’s office said. They each pleaded not guilty during their arraignments in Queens County Supreme Court.

Authorities report that their scheme began on April 10, 2023, when they submitted a fraudulent document to the city’s finance department. They claimed a 76-year-old woman transferred her Jamaica Estates property to a company owned by Ray. They allegedly forged the signature of the woman’s deceased sister and a notary. Weeks later they allegedly targeted a mother and daughter in Kew Garden Hills, fabricating documents to sell the property for $600,000. They reportedly wired about $442,000 to Ray’s bank account, which is now involved in a civil lawsuit on hold due to the investigation.

On May 4, the defendants tried to acquire another Jamaica Estates home owned by an 82-year-old woman. After hearings, Supreme Court Justice Leigh Cheng released them on supervised release, requiring Avinger to wear an electronic monitor due to his criminal history. If convicted, they face prison sentences of five to 25 years.
