A group of high school lacrosse players in upstate New York was asked to turn themselves in this week related to a hazing incident or risk legal consequences. 11 players from Westhill High School in Syracuse came forward after it was reported that they staged a fake armed kidnapping involving at least five teammates on April 24. The District Attorney called it “hazing on steroids,” per WSYR, according to PEOPLE.
In a press conference, District Attorney Fitzpatrick said a student was taken to a remote area by a teammate, where other students wearing black attacked him, covering his head and leaving him in a trunk. Reports noted that there was a gun and knife involved. The victim was later taken home.
“I’ve seen the video tape of what happened to this young man, it is not a rite of passage, it is not a trivial matter,” District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said at a press conference. “I find it incomprehensible that in this day and age that somebody thought they could have gotten away with something like this.”
Fitzpatrick said at least four other students avoided similar treatment. He gave the students 48 hours to come forward and face minor charges. If not, they would face serious adult charges. All 11 students surrendered within 24 hours.
An attorney for one student, Tom Cerio, said his client is aware that their actions were wrong and acknowledges the “fear and distress” caused to the other students, per Good Morning America.
“We must address the culture of the program, and the most appropriate way to do that is with a reset,” said Stephen Durham, Westhill Central School Superintendent. He noted that the season has been canceled for the varsity boys lacrosse team.
