Woman Sentenced To 6.5 Years Behind Bars For Attempting To Light Officer On Fire

Latta Police Department

A woman from Latta, South Carolina was sentenced to more than six years behind bars after attempting to set a cop on fire, per WBTW Myrtle Beach. Reports noted that 38-year-old Melissa McCoy

“pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and battery Circuit Court Judge Kirk Griffin sentenced McCoy to 6.5 years in prison,”

per the solicitor’s office.

Shipp Daniel, the Assistant Solicitor who handled the case, expressed that police officers are burdened with heavy workloads and low pay, and that incidents like this should not be accepted.

The Assistant Solicitor said,

“The last thing they [police officers] need is for someone to attempt to evade arrest by spraying lighter fluid on the officer and attempting to light him on fire.”

“We take behavior like that against our law enforcement agents seriously, and we are pleased the court does also,”

Daniel continued.

On Dec. 30, 2023, Latta officials made an authorized attempt to apprehend McCoy.

Following a short pursuit inside her residence, the woman used lighter fluid on an officer, including spraying it in his eyes, and tried to set him on fire.
