“hunting accident”

on Sunday, sadly, resulted in the demise of a 13-year-old boy, according to PEOPLE

Cameron Connor, the victim of a tragic hunting accident in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, was struck by a friend while hunting on private grounds. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is currently investigating the incident, according to their post on Twitter. 

Per a police statement,

“This is an ongoing investigation, and we will update as we’re able… Our thoughts are with the boy’s family and loved ones.”

USA Today reports that the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office is performing an autopsy and toxicology examination to learn the cause of death. The findings have not been disclosed as of Wednesday.

According to Penny Wagers Connor, the mother of the boy, both he and his friend were

“hunting ducks”

when the unfortunate incident took place. The boys attended the Dorchester Academy together as they were just in eighth grade. They also played football and baseball.
