A toddler from Ohio, who played with a gun he reportedly located on his parent’s nightstand, mistakenly shot and killed his mother, Laura Ilg, who was 8 months pregnant, officials say, PEOPLE reports. On Friday, police responded to a call from the 31-year-old mother who informed emergency responders that she was shot in her back by the 2-year-old, says a Norwalk Police Department press release.

Moments later officials got a call from the woman’s husband, Alek Ilg, 28, saying his wife told him to contact 911 after

“screaming something about my son.”

Officers discovered the woman in the upstairs bedroom next to her son with a firearm. Authorities say the woman was conscious and was able to tell them what occurred. A release says the woman was transported to the hospital as she underwent an emergency c-section. Sadly, the baby was declared deceased while Ilg was declared dead nearly three hours later.

Officials said the husband’s firearm is normally kept in their bedroom’s nightstand. Before the woman passed away, she told officials that the room is usually kept locked, and several baby gates are arranged throughout their Norwalk home. She said the toddler managed to gain access to the room and got ahold of the firearm while she was doing laundry.

Police discovered two more firearms after searching the home. Cleveland 19 News reports that the toddler is with his father as the investigation into how the boy was able to pull the trigger continues.
