Convict Known As “The Facebook Rapist” Is On The Run After Faking His Death And Escaping Prison

Police officials in South Africa have launched a nationwide manhunt for a convicted rapist known as the “Facebook Rapist,” after he faked his death and escaped a privately-run maximum security prison in Bloemfontein, CBS News reports.

In 2012, Thabo Bester was sentenced to life in prison for the rape, robbery, and murder of a model. He had previously been convicted of raping and robbing two aspiring models that he had lured through Facebook. In May of 2022, a spokesperson from The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) announced Bester’s death. They claimed that a fire had started in his prison cell at the Mangaung Correctional Centre, taking his life.

Almost a year later, after investigating the death further, DNA tests revealed that the burned remains found in the serial rapist’s cell belong to someone else. The victim used to fake Bester’s death has yet to be identified, but an autopsy revealed that the cause of death was from blunt force trauma to the head before being set on fire. Officials are now investigating the incident as a homicide.

The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services is now offering a reward for those with any information leading to Bester’s re-arrest.

“No stone will be left unturned in getting to the bottom of Thabo Bester’s escape, and there will be serious consequences for any party involved,” the ministry said in a statement.

Alabama Police Officer Indicted After Fatally Shooting Pregnant Girlfriend And Saying She Committed Suicide

An Alabama police officer is now facing murder charges after fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the head, and telling dispatchers that she had committed suicide, the New York Post reported.

In January of 2022, Huntsville police officer David McCoy began arguing with his girlfriend and mom-to-be Courtney Spraggins while sitting in her car outside his apartment. According to text messages found on the 29-year-old’s phone, Spraggins wanted to move in with McCoy so that the couple could raise their baby together, but McCoy was already in a relationship with another woman who was living with him. Weeks prior to the shooting, he allegedly told the victim he “needed more time.” When Spraggins asked McCoy what she should do in the meantime, the suspect responded coldly, “A bullet to the head sounds good to me.”

On January 7th, McCoy called the non-emergency police number to see if there were any reports of gunshots fired. He then reported that he had woken up to the sound of a shot from a small-caliber gun. Minutes after, officers arrived to the scene and discovered Spraggins dead from a gunshot wound in the driver’s seat of her vehicle. When investigators question McCoy, he told them “I think I’ve seen her once” and that it seemed like she had committed suicide.

After a photo of him was found inside Spraggins’ vehicle, McCoy’s apartment was searched, and he was brought in for further questioning. Inside, police discovered Spraggins’ phone with the text messages that indicated what led to the incident, and the murder weapon. McCoy also tested positive for gunshot residue.

On March 24th, McCoy was indicted on capital murder charges. The former police officer is now facing multiple charges, including killing a person inside a car, killing a person and her unborn child, and killing a person under 14 (the unborn child). He is scheduled to appear in court on April 4th.

A man on a Delta Air Lines flight has been taken into police custody after triggering the plane’s emergency slide prior to takeoff, CBS News reported.

At around 10 A.M. on Saturday, the passenger allegedly opened one of the plane’s emergency exit doors, causing the emergency slide to deploy as the plane was pushing away from the gate at the Los Angeles International Airport. After going down the slide, the man reportedly jumped onto the back of a baggage cart, where he was then held by the airport crew members until authorities arrived.

  • Wisconsin Woman Fatally Shoots Car Salesman While Arguing Over Faulty Vehicle

Wisconsin Woman Fatally Shoots Car Salesman While Arguing Over Faulty Vehicle

A Wisconsin woman is now in police custody after a heated argument led to the fatal shooting of a car dealership employee, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.

The Middleton Police Department is investigating the death of Kawsu Samba after a shooting occurred at MSI Auto Sales in Middleton, Wisconsin, the 34-year-old’s place of work. Two hours later, 23-year-old Jakira Anderson was located and arrested without incident.

According to police documents, Anderson had been at the dealership for more than four hours, attempting to get a refund or an exchange for a faulty vehicle she had recently leased. When the conversation with Samba escalated, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim as he attempted to push her out of the building.

Anderson, who had purchased the gun legally and carried it in her waistband, told police that she had no intentions of harming the man. She says that she wanted to intimidate him. “I wasn’t trying to kill him- just scare (him) away,” she allegedly told Detective Daniel Jones. “I didn’t think I was going to hit him. I wasn’t even aiming or nothing.”

Unfortunately, though Samba was taken to a nearby hospital, his wounds were too great and he was pronounced dead shortly after. Anderson was later charged with first-degree intentional homicide. She is scheduled to reappear in court on March 30th, and is being held on a $1 million bond.

State Assistant Public Defender Adam Welch says that though Anderson fled the scene after the shooting, “there are also facts in the complaint suggesting that Miss Anderson felt threatened at that time and was afraid.” The criminal complaint against the suspect stated that video from the dealership’s surveillance footage showed Samba repeatedly pushing and shoving Anderson, but no additional information has been provided.

  • Alabama Man Was Denied Water For Over 70 Hours Before Dying In Police Custody From Hypothermia

Alabama Man Was Denied Water For Over 70 Hours Before Dying In Police Custody From Hypothermia

At the end of January, Alabama man Anthony “Tony” Mitchell died from hypothermia while also being denied water for 70 hours while in police custody. Now, his family is suing. According to CBS 42, a lawsuit alleges that Mitchell was denied access to medical and mental health treatment, hit with a stun gun, and repeatedly dragged by corrections officers when he could not walk.

Tony Mitchell was taken to Walker County Jail and spent nearly 14 days there before his death on January 26th. Kept in a cell referred to as “the freezer,” due to its cold temperatures, Mitchell was denied a bunk, a sink, or any source of water. The cell only had a small hole in the floor covered with grating that could be used as a toilet.

In those two weeks, the lawsuit claims that Mitchell had been provided a mat, a blanket, and later had a suicide watch garment, but those were all taken from him within the first few days. He spent the majority of the time naked, and sitting on a bare, concrete floor. He was given three meals a day, usually without water, and was allowed to shower less than half of the days he was in police custody.

On the day of his death, a correctional officer offered him water for the first time within 70 hours, but Mitchell had been too weak from dehydration and hypothermia to sit up and drink it. Medical staff advised authorities to take him to a hospital at around 4:17 A.M., but video footage showed that Mitchell wasn’t transported from the facility until over four and a half hours later. At 1:15 P.M., he was pronounced dead.

“I am not sure what circumstances the patient was held in incarceration, but it is difficult to understand a rectal temperature of 72° F 22° centigrade while someone is incarcerated in jail,” the emergency room’s doctor’s notes state. “The cause of his hypothermia is not clear. . . I do believe that hypothermia was the ultimate cause of his death.”

In a statement released by the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, officials say that Mitchell was alert and conscious as he was rushed to receive medical care. A released surveillance video contradicts those claims, showing that the inmate had to be carried out by multiple staff members. Knowing they were already caught in a massive lie, the lawyer representing the sheriff’s office have yet to respond to the amended complaint.
