California School District Ordered To Pay $2.5 Million To Sex Abuse Victim Of Teacher Who Had Student’s Baby

Redlands Police Department

A Southern California school district has reached a settlement of $2.25 million with a victim of sexual abuse by a teacher, who was impregnated by another student. This settlement adds to the total amount of $8.25 million that the Redlands Unified School District has paid to victims of Laura Whitehurst since her arrest in 2013, reports FOX.

The most recent lawsuit was filed in 2021 by a former student of Redlands High School. The plaintiff’s attorney stated that the student was targeted by Whitehurst between 2007 and 2008 when he was only 14 years old. According to the lawsuit, Whitehurst admitted to engaging in sexual activity with the student approximately 15 times, both at her San Bernardino classroom and her apartment

Whitehurst, an English teacher and soccer coach, pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with three former students, one of whom is the father of her child. She was sentenced to six months in jail and registered as a sex offender in 2014, the same year she gave birth.

In 2016, the school district agreed to pay an additional $6 million to another victim, who is the father of Whitehurst’s child. The abuse took place over the course of a year, starting when the student was 16 years old.

The victim in the recent lawsuit claimed that officials at Redlands Unified were aware of his relationship with the teacher but failed to alert his family, leading to the ongoing abuse.
