A former Louisiana correctional officer, Roberta Bell found herself unemployed after she promised an inmate to take care of her baby, according to reports. Bell met Katie, a pregnant inmate at the Louisiana Transitional Center for Women, who had no one to care for her baby while she served her remaining two months in prison. Determined to help, Bell told her supervisor about her plan, but was told that it could be seen as a

“conflict of interest.”

When asked by her supervisor if she was still going to take the child in, Bell confidently replied that she would indeed care for the baby if the hospital called her.

Sadly, the former correction officer’s commitment to help cost her job. A week later, the hospital called to inform her that the baby had been born. Overwhelmed with joy, Bell took pictures and held the precious baby boy, whom Katie named Kason, the same name as one of Bell’s grandsons.

For two months, Bell raised baby Kason until Katie’s release from prison. This experience led Bell to continue her mission of helping women in need by establishing the Serenity House,

“a transitional home for women coming out of prison”

in rural Mississippi, reports say. Bell hopes to have the renovations completed soon to start assisting these women.

The woman reflected on her experience, discussing the importance of following your heart.

She said,

“Don’t be afraid to step out and believe what’s in your heart and know that God is going to take care of you. Even if it’s breaking a rule.”

“If I had to do it all over again – I would do it,”

she continued.
