Local authorities reported that a father from Texas was apprehended over the weekend for allegedly abandoning his hungry children in a car while he visited nearby bars, per the New York Post. El Paso authorities reportedly arrested Fabio Aaron Minchala on Saturday after witnesses found his two children, aged two and six, alone in a locked car. The witnesses claimed to have heard the car horn honking, per CBS4.

After the car was opened by fire crews, the children alerted the firefighters that they were starving. Minchala was located at a nearby bar and admitted to knowing his children were in the car and intending to return soon, according to CBS4.

According to the source, the father appeared to be intoxicated as he slurred his words

He also had the smell of alcohol, and struggled to stay balanced. Two bartenders at nearby bars supported this, stating that Minchala had been kicked out for being drunk and confrontational.

Minchala, after four years of marriage, filed for divorce from his wife in September. According to KTSM, the divorce was completed just two days before his reported episode of excessive drinking.

Reports noted that the father was charged with

“two counts of child abandonment with attempt to return, and was released Tuesday on $15,000 bond,”

per the news outlet.
