Grandfather Arrested After Confessing To The Fatal Shooting Of His 16-Year-Old Grandson

Henry County Detention Center

A grandfather from Missouri has allegedly admitted to shooting and killing his 16-year-old grandson, reports FOX. Thomas Ribby, 70, reportedly shot Royce Hayes Osburn in a home in Clinton, Missouri. The police were told by Ribby that he didn’t realize the gun was loaded, but the family is perplexed as to why he aimed it at his grandson in the first place. There had been previous conflicts between Ribby and Osburn, but the family and witnesses never expected it would end in tragedy.

According to charging documents, Ribby had given Osburn a gun to toy with earlier that evening. A bystander claimed that they saw Osburn playing with the firearm and pretending to

“clear rooms.”

After the alleged shooting, Osburn went to his mother, Melissa Ribby, clutching his chest and said,

“papa shot me.”

Melissa Ribby tearfully shared,

“My baby died in my arms.”

Thomas Ribby locked himself in his apartment when officials arrived. Melissa Ribby expressed her anger and pain, stating,

“I don’t even want to see him. He’s not my dad. He’s not my dad at all.”

She believes her child deserved better and that if Ribby wanted to kill someone, he should have done it to himself.

Osburn’s family revealed that it was the 16-year-old’s dream to become a police officer one day. Ribby is currently being held at the Henry County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash-only bond. He is facing charges of first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and resisting arrest.
