Sadly, an infant drowned in a bathtub while the child’s mother was cooking, and a 14-year-old who was placed in charge of the baby was playing on a computer, officials say, according to the New York Post

The incident occurred on Thursday minutes before 6:40 p.m. Officials were called to the apartment and responded to reports of a minor who was unresponsive. According to officials, the mother stepped away from the child to finish cooking a meal and instructed the 14-year-old to look over the infant during bath time.

The unidentified teen prepared the bath water and placed the young child inside. The teen then proceeded to leave the bathroom to utilize the computer, ultimately leaving the child without any supervision. The mother then returned to the bathroom and discovered the bathtub overflowing with water and then realized the child drowned.

Officials say relatives allegedly didn’t remember that the child was in the bathtub alone, which overflowed with water because the drain was jammed. The gender and age of the child have not been identified; however, it’s been revealed that the child was under a year. The child was transported to the hospital and was later declared deceased.

The investigation is still pending and no charges have been filed as of yet.
