A mother from Oklahoma has pleaded guilty to accidentally killing her teenage daughter while trying to shoot a stray dog that was attacking kittens, reports the New York Post. Amanda Myrene Fields Moffett, a 43-year-old Cherokee citizen, entered the plea after being charged with involuntary manslaughter for the tragic incident that occurred five years ago. Moffett’s 16-year-old daughter, Laramie, lost her life in the incident. Moffett admitted that she fired a handgun into the dark yard, thinking it was the dog, without confirming that her daughter was out of harm’s way
The US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Oklahoma stated that
“every gun owner has the legal responsibility to use extreme caution when discharging a firearm.”
Moffett initially faced a first-degree murder charge, but it was dismissed after her attorney argued that she was wrongfully charged in state court. There were also discrepancies regarding the number of times the girl was shot. Moffett now faces a maximum of eight years in a federal prison, and the sentence will be determined by a federal judge considering various factors.
The case was investigated by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations, FBI, and Nowata County Sheriff’s Office. Moffett will remain on supervised release until the sentencing, which has yet to be scheduled.
