In Indiana, a murder suspect was mistakenly released from jail just two days after being locked up.
28-year-old Kevin Mason had been on the run for two years before being arrested on multiple charges, including murder. Due to a mistake made by inmate clerks, the holds on his file were removed, allowing him to be released. Two clerks have been fired as a result of the error.
Sheriff Col. James Martin said,
“Our clerk that was reviewing it sees three Minnesota holds, didn’t realize what she was doing, obviously.”
“It’s a critical error, critical mistake. They’re identified very specifically by the originating agency that did it. They have a specific ID number, they’re all different and the case numbers are all different,”
he went on to say.
The victim’s family is frustrated and feels that justice is being delayed. The victim’s sister, Shannell Catchings, informed FOX59,
“For 27 months I’ve been trying to get some type of justice and then now I just feel like we’re back at square one.”
She continued,
“I don’t know what happened in that jail and even with the person getting fired, it’s like, OK, we don’t feel no type of relief from because at the end of the day, he’s still out.”
Authorities kept the accidental release quiet for almost two weeks to have an advantage in finding him. Mason is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall with various tattoos.
