One Dead After Fight Breaks Out Among Spectators During Middle School Basketball Game

In Alburgh, Vermont, a town close to the Canadian border, a brawl between spectators ended with the death of a 60-year-old man.

According to ESPN, state police responded to Alburgh Community Education Center after a physical altercation involving multiple adults was reported during a middle school basketball game between Alburgh and St. Albans City Schools. The cause of the fight has yet to be revealed, but officials say that it had ended before authorities had arrived to the scene.

Several of those involved, including 60-year-old Russell Giroux of Alburgh, left immediately after the brawl. Later that night, Giroux was transported to the hospital by ambulance to the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. Moments after, he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death will be conducted by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington, Vermont. State police say that they are working with the Grand Isle County state’s attorney as they continue to investigate.

“Our immediate goal is to remind and educate our students and families that our school culture is one of family, community, and kindness,” the Alburgh Community Education Center said in a statement released on their website. “We need our students and community to commit to the positive culture that our school community expects and deserves.”
