A security guard was critically injured after being shot in the back of the head while intervening in a fight at a high school football game in Utica, NY, per the NY Post.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of Thomas R. Proctor High School, just after 4 p.m. on Saturday. Video footage captured a group of around twelve individuals engaged in a brawl when at least two gunshots rang out.

One of the security guards attempting to separate the fighting parties was struck by a bullet, causing him to collapse. He was immediately transported to the hospital and is currently in critical condition.

Police Chief Mark Williams revealed that the violent group had been refused entry into the stadium moments before the shooting took place. The motive behind the altercation remains unclear, though authorities suspect gang involvement.

Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of firing the gun, but they have not disclosed the details surrounding the events leading to the tragic incident.

This incident follows recent acts of violence during high school football games in Louisiana and Oklahoma, highlighting the disturbing trend of gun-related incidents at such events.
