33-year-old Franz Jeudy, a suspect with a history of assaulting people with unexpected punches, allegedly attacked 57-year-old Dulche Pichardo in Brooklyn as she walked home from work. Jeudy’s attack resulted in Pichardo’s broken jaw and multiple missing teeth. Jeudy’s criminal record shows a pattern of similar attacks, and reports added that he has a

“history of mental illness.”

Officials apprehended Jeudy after the incident, per the New York Post

A Brooklyn judge released Jeudy although he caused severe injuries to Pichardo. The charges against Jeudy were a misdemeanor.

The distraught victim expressed to The Post,

“This is terrible. I don’t want this to happen to anybody else.”

“He’s not supposed to be free… They know that he’s dangerous. You cannot have these people outside that are that dangerous,”

she continued.

According to officials, Jeudy has a history of previous arrests for two separate incidents of random punching, one of which involved a law enforcement officer while the other attack involved a security guard. He was charged with two misdemeanors for these attacks back in 2018 and January 2019.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office dismissed both misdemeanor assault charges against Jeudy in August 2019. Jeudy, who has a history of schizophrenia, was deemed incapable of going to trial. It’s unclear if there was any requirement for him to receive mental aid.

After the attacks, Jeudy was directed to the NYPD’s

“co-response unit”

in 2020. This specialized team, including both police officers and licensed mental health professionals, is called when there are reports of individuals in emotional distress. Jeudy’s mental health background is recorded on his criminal record, ensuring that any law enforcement, court personnel, or district attorney who accesses his information is aware of his history. Additionally, authorities have been called multiple times since 2013 to provide aid for Jeudy.
