Sergeant Suspended Without Pay After Fatally Tossing Cooler at Motorcyclist In NYC

A tragic incident occurred in the University Heights area of the Bronx when a motorcyclist, involved in a drug bust, crashed and lost his life, ABC News reported. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported that the fatal outcome resulted from Sergeant Erik Duran throwing a plastic cooler at the fleeing suspect in an attempt to stop him. As a result, Duran has been suspended without pay while an investigation takes place.

Surveillance footage, examined by the Associated Press, shows the motorcyclist, Eric Duprey, riding on a sidewalk towards a group of individuals. Just before the crash, one person, now reportedly known to be Sergeant Duran, picks up a red cooler and hurls it at the motorcyclist from close range. The impact causes the rider to lose control, leading to a collision with a tree and a metal barricade.

The New York State Attorney General Letitia James’ office, responsible for investigating police-involved deaths, is conducting an inquiry with the full cooperation of the NYPD.

“The NYPD is committed to ensuring that there will be a full, thorough, and transparent investigation of this incident to determine the facts and to take the appropriate steps forward,”

the department said in a statement.

According to a preliminary report, Duprey lost control and struck a parked vehicle after being hit by Duran’s thrown cooler. The incident was first reported by The Daily News.

The 30-year-old man was attempting to evade undercover narcotics officers during a

    “buy-and-bust”

operation, a common police tactic. Duran, who joined the NYPD in 2010 and has received numerous commendations, has previous disciplinary issues, including a substantiated abuse of authority complaint from last year.

Squatting Couple Arrested After Children Were Found Locked In A Room Eating A Mattress

A couple who was reportedly squatting at a vacant Bronx apartment was arrested after police found two children in a locked bedroom eating bits of a foam mattress, BXTimes reported.

The suspect, Stephanie Grabowski, a 40-year-old, and her boyfriend Mark Russell, 45, have been arrested, police announced. The couple was allegedly squatting in an apartment at the New York City Housing Authority’s Mitchel Houses, according to the DA’s office.

NYPD officers were sent to vacate the residence on May 3 only to find Grabowski’s two daughters, ages five and four, inside a filthy bedroom covered in feces and filled with dirty diapers and garbage, according to the DA’s office.

“The defendants allegedly kept these little girls in a house of horrors,”

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark told the outlet.

“They illegally occupied an apartment and left the children alone without food or clothing. Fortunately, police rescued the girls, and a nurse discovered signs of abuse for which they are being treated. The situation is beyond the pale.”

The children have been placed under the care of the Children’s Advocacy Center. According to medical examiners at Jacobi Medical Center, the two girls suffered

“significant bruising and marks in various stages of healing, rashes throughout their bodies and difficulties walking, standing and speaking.”

    The couple both face

according to the Department of Corrections. Grabowski is being held at Rikers Island where she faces additional charges for

    “two counts of first-degree kidnapping”

for an incident that happened between Nov. 14 through May 3 at the Mitchel Houses apartment and also at 420 E. 169th St, reports reveal.

  • NYC Firefighter Charged For Stealing Credit Card From Dead Man and Attempting To Use It To Buy Airpods, Groceries and Gas

NYC Firefighter Charged For Stealing Credit Card From Dead Man and Attempting To Use It To Buy Airpods, Groceries and Gas

An FDNY firefighter has been indicted for stealing credit cards from a dead patient and going on a shopping spree with them, NY Post reported.

The suspect, 33-year-old Sylus McKenzie, of the Bronx, allegedly attempted to purchase AirPods at Target and several items at a Food Bazaar supermarket and Sunoco gas station, according to authorities.

The disturbing events occurred on Jan. 11, 2021, when McKenzie responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive man in Manhattan. The resident was pronounced dead at the scene, the DA said in a press release. McKenzie took the opportunity to steal the dead man’s credit cards while other first responders were sealing the home.

Prosecutors allege that McKenzie went the next morning, between 9 and 11 a.m., going to different stores attempting to use the victim’s cards. Trying to spend a total amount of $1,123.21, authorities said.

McKenzie was indicted last week on several charges including

“grand larceny, attempted identity theft, criminal impersonation, and official misconduct,”

reports reveal. He had been working for the FDNY for four years prior to his arrest.

“The defendant, a firefighter in the New York City Fire Department, allegedly stole an American Express card and a Mastercard while responding to a 911 call at the Manhattan home of a patient who died,’’

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said in the statement.

“A day later, the defendant allegedly went to various stores in the Bronx and made purchases using the stolen cards… These alleged actions are reprehensible, even more so because he is a member of the city’s Bravest and violated the public trust.”

  • Woman Who Was Killed In A Fire Went Back Inside To Save Her Dog, Relatives Say ‘She Considered Her A Daughter So She Went Back’

Woman Who Was Killed In A Fire Went Back Inside To Save Her Dog, Relatives Say ‘She Considered Her A Daughter So She Went Back’

A family is devastated after losing their loved one in a fire. Nassau County officials say the fire occurred around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, reports PEOPLE. Officials say the Long Island home was

    “fully engulfed in flames”

when authorities got to the scene.

Seven people managed to escape the home and are in stable condition after they were treated for smoke inhalation; however, sadly, one person was discovered dead inside the home. Family members say 60-year-old Kashmira Patel died after going back into the home to save her dog. Kashmira’s niece, Chush Patel told CBS,

“She considered her a daughter, so she went back… She actually came all the way to the door, helped her mom out of the house, and then she went back.”

A relative wrote on a GoFundMe page for the family,

“Seven of us figured a way out of the house, whether it was from the main door or the window… My dad’s sister and her dog… tried [to] escape from the back door, and it breaks my heart to say both didn’t make it out.”

Family members appeared to become frustrated with the reaction of Nassau County firefighters. Tarun Patel told NBC New York,

“I asked them why didn’t you spread the water because my sister is there. They said no, we cannot go in.”

According to PEOPLE, Nassau County firefighters revealed that they were briefly stopped from entering the home because of the

    “downed power line.”

    Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said,

“It was actually blocking the front door. They actually jumped over that line and tried to make entry,”

reports NBC New York. The official went on to say that the fire hydrant close to the home didn’t work; however, they were able to locate another one that worked. WPIX reports that it’s unclear what caused the fire.

Woman Jumped To Her Death From New York City Hotel Following Fight With Boyfriend, Reports Say

Sadly, a woman from Colorado fell to her death from the top of a New York City hotel following an alleged fight that occurred between her and her boyfriend. According to Fox, the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday. The 20-year-old woman remains unidentified and witnesses claimed they heard shouting coming from the pair’s hotel room at the OYO Times Square hotel, reports the New York Post. Reports added that the 24-year-old boyfriend, Tyler Griffen, bruised the woman and also put their 8-month-old child in harm’s way.

The fight allegedly leaked from their room into the hotel’s hallway and stairwell. Spectators say the man grasped and yanked the child’s arm causing the baby to fall to the 9th floor, where luckily, a hotel guest caught the child. The baby was determined to be unharmed after being inspected by a medical expert.

After the child fell, the unnamed woman allegedly went to the roof of the hotel and jumped. Reports added that she was declared deceased at the scene.

Although officials say they don’t believe Griffen pushed the woman, he is awaiting arraignment on multiple charges including assault. At one point, he was transported to a hospital and determined to be an
