Ugandan Man Detained, Suspected Of Planning Bomb Attack On Church

Reports By African News says officials in Uganda said on Sunday they had foiled a bomb attack on a cathedral in the capital Kampala and arrested a man suspected of trying to activate the explosive device among worshippers. Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Rubaga Miracle Centre cathedral after the man tried to enter with an explosive device, said police spokesman Patrick Onyango.

“We carried out a controlled detonation of the improvised explosive device consisting of nails, a motorbike battery, a charger and a telephone handset that was to be used in the attack,”

He told reporters outside the cathedral. He said police tracked the 28-year-old after receiving a tip about a possible attack on a place of worship, and found a bomb in his rucksack when he was arrested. Police are looking for three other men as the suspect indicated that he may have had accomplices.

The perimeter of the cathedral was cordoned off; sniffer dogs and members of bomb squads inspected the area; however, no threat was detected.

“The terrorist was a few metres from the entrance but the security forces intervened and he was arrested before he could enter the church and detonate the bomb”,

Says the evangelical pastor Robert Kayanja.

Gabon Army Officials Seize Power Following The Re-election Of President Ali Bongo, Report Say

Reports by Reuters says Military officers in oil-producing Gabon have reportedly seized power on Wednesday and put President Ali Bongo under house arrest, stepping in minutes after the Central African state’s election body announced he had won a third term. The officers who said they represented the armed forces declared on television that the election results were cancelled, borders were closed and state institutions were dissolved, after a tense vote without international observers that was set to extend the Bongo family’s more than half century in power.

Hundreds of people celebrated the military’s intervention, while France, Gabon’s former colonial ruler which has troops stationed in the African nation, condemned the coup. The officers said they had detained Bongo, who took over in 2009 from his father Omar, who ruled since 1967. They said they had arrested the president’s son, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, and others for corruption and treason.

Opponents say the family has done little to share the state’s oil and mining wealth with its 2.3 million people. Violent unrest had broken out after Bongo’s disputed 2016 election win and there was a foiled coup attempt in 2019. After the officers’ announcement, internet access appeared to be restored for the first time since Saturday’s vote.

“I get a lot of jabs. I got a lot of people that say stuff about me. People have trolled me severally on social media. And, sometimes it hurts. Sometimes some people will just go on social media to say rubbish. It’s just like terrorists bombing innocent people.”

The father of seven noted that even though people constantly berated him, none of them came through to help pay his children’s tuition on his behalf. He expressed that trolls comment without the understanding that he parents his children in his way, and there is no guide to raising one’s kids.He said,

“And I will start wondering how till today, none of those critics the way they are concerned about my family come to assist in paying my children’s school fees. Not even a single soul. •  20 Year Old Ugandan Man Charged With Aggravated Homosexuality Punishable By Death

20 Year Old Ugandan Man Charged With Aggravated Homosexuality Punishable By Death

According To African News, A 20-year-old Ugandan man has become the first individual in the country to be indicted on charges of

    “aggravated homosexuality,”

A criminal offense carrying the possibility of capital punishment as per the recently enacted anti-gay legislation, according to both prosecutors and the defendant’s legal counsel. Despite international pressure from Western governments and human rights organizations, Uganda introduced one of the world’s strictest statutes against the LGBT community in May. The legislation stipulates a sentence of life imprisonment for consensual same-sex relations.

    In instances deemed

    “aggravated,”

Including repeated offenses, same-sex acts resulting in terminal illness transmission, or engaging in such acts with a minor, elderly person, or an individual with disabilities, the death penalty can be imposed. As stated in a charge document reviewed by Reuters, the accused was formally charged with aggravated homosexuality on August 18 after reportedly engaging in

    “illicit sexual activity”

With a 41-year-old man. The specifics that warranted the classification as

    “aggravated”

Were not explicitly outlined. Jacqueline Okui, spokesperson for the office of the director of public prosecutions, affirmed that the defendant was apprised of the capital charge within a Magistrate’s Court on August 18, given the charge’s jurisdiction within the High Court.

The defendant was subsequently remanded. Okui refrained from providing further details about the ongoing case and stated that no prior instances of aggravated homosexuality charges were within her knowledge. Attorney Justine Balya, representing the defendant, expressed her belief in the unconstitutionality of the entire law. While legal challenges have been initiated, the judiciary has yet to engage with the matter. Balya indicated that her client is the inaugural case of prosecution for aggravated homosexuality and declined to delve into case particulars.

Though Uganda has not implemented capital punishment for nearly two decades, the legal provision remains and President Yoweri Museveni had raised the prospect of resuming executions in 2018 to address rising criminality. The recent enactment of the law prompted international censure and threats of sanctions. Subsequently, the World Bank suspended new public funding for Uganda in response. The United States additionally imposed visa constraints on select Ugandan officials, and President Joe Biden initiated a review of U.S. assistance to the nation.

  • GABON Government Imposes Curfew and Cuts Internet Access As National Elections Wrap Up

GABON Government Imposes Curfew and Cuts Internet Access As National Elections Wrap Up

According To African News, Gabon’s government announced a nationwide curfew and cut off internet access Saturday evening as voting in major national elections was wrapping up. The Central African nation’s communications minister, Rodrigue Mboumba Bissawou, said on state television that there would be a nightly curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. He said internet access was being restricted indefinitely, saying there had been calls for violence and the spreading of disinformation. The announcement came after voters cast ballots to elect new local leaders, national legislators and Gabon’s next president.

Incumbent President Ali Bongo Ondimba was seeking a third seven-year term and to continue a 55-year political dynasty. Bongo came to power in 2009 after the death of his father, Omar Bongo, who ruled the country for 41 years. Bongo, 64, won his current term in office by a narrow margin in 2016 amid violent protests. This year, the opposition united in favor of his main challenger, economics professor Albert Ondo Ossa, one week before Saturday’s elections. Around 847,000 people were eligible to cast ballots Saturday. Voters in Libreville, Gabon’s capital, complained of polling stations opening late. Voting was scheduled to begin in the morning, but many election sites had failed to open as of 2 p.m.

“Voters must benefit from the 10-hour period provided for by electoral law,”

Said Paulette Missambo, who withdrew from the presidential race in favor of Ossa, an independent candidate. Ossa’s platform revolves around breaking Gabon out of the status quo. He said that if elected, he would dissolve the National Assembly, redraw the electoral map and organize a new legislative election, with a goal of forming a government committed to addressing economic inequality.

“Sixty years in power is too much. I’m not afraid of President Bongo,”

Ossa said after casting his ballot at a Libreville school on Saturday afternoon. In anticipation of post-electoral violence, many people in the capital went to visit family in other parts of the country or left Gabon altogether. Others stockpiled food or bolstered security in their homes.
