A mother from Texas is being charged after reportedly serving Jell-O shots to fifth graders at a holiday party, per PEOPLE.
Teresa Bernal is facing felony charge for injuring a child after students at Jones Elementary School ate vodka-infused Jell-O shots on Dec. 20. Most students had consumed the shots before staff discovered the alcohol, according to a court affidavit. Bernal claimed she didn’t know the shots contained any booze.
According to the affidavit, she claimed she didn’t know Jell-O shots contained alcohol until that day. Once teachers learned what happened, they sent affected students to the nurse. The officer for the school, Darrin Grissom, noted that almost all 15 students he spoke to reported stomachaches and headaches. Two students experienced more serious reactions.
The affidavit mentions that some Jell-O shots had strawberries and whipped cream, and others had a holiday theme. Grissom reached out to the store where Bernal bought the shots. The person who took the order agreed to share details. The complaint states Bernal asked if the shots contained alcohol after the kids had consumed them, and Grissom claims the Facebook ad advertising the shots indicated that vodka was used in the shots.
“In my opinion, there is no way Bernal could have missed the fact that the Jello-O shots she purchased … contained drinking alcohol,” said Grissom.
