Woman Allegedly Tricks Reverend into Certifying Marriage Certificate with Ex After He Broke Up with Her

A 42-year-old man from Texas was shocked when he arrived at his Beverly Hills home on Friday night, to find a package from Bath & Body Works sent by his ex-girlfriend, per PEOPLE.

According to a press release from the Beverly Hills Police Department, inside the package was a photo of his ex, 36-year-old Kristin Marie Spearman,

“holding what appears to be a marriage license showing them married and officiated by a local reverend.”

Additionally, the package included a copy of the marriage certificate, which had been filed with the McLennan County Clerk’s Office. Police reported that the man stated he and Spearman had been in a relationship and had obtained a marriage license around June 2. Following the distribution of the license, the couple had

    “an argument,”

during which the man informed Spearman that

“he did not want to be in a relationship.”

    An investigation found that

“Spearman, pursuant to the scheme of obtaining a marriage certificate, convinced the reverend to certify the victim and Kristin in the Holy Union of Matrimony without the knowledge of the victim and his required presence,”

police said. Spearman then submitted the certificate to the county clerk.

Working alongside the Hewitt Police Department, authorities arrested Spearman at her residence near Hewitt. She has been charged with third-degree felony stalking and is currently in the McLennan County Jail, held on a $10,000 bond, according to jail records. The Beverly Hills Police Department announced in the release that they will not reveal the name of the reverend “to prevent harassment and influence” as the case proceeds.

  • Some Texans Fear the Looming THC Ban Could Return Them To Opioids, Illegal Options

Some Texans Fear the Looming THC Ban Could Return Them To Opioids, Illegal Options

The looming Texas THC ban is causing concern for people. Wesley Barnes, a 55-year-old Army veteran exposed to sarin gas during the Gulf War, has struggled with pain and PTSD since his 1994 discharge. For years, he managed with heavy opioids, until they dulled more than just the pain. “I was functioning, but barely,” he told The Texas Tribune.

In 2021, Barnes turned to Texas’s Compassionate Use Program for legal access to medical marijuana/THC. While the treatment helped, the costs did not. Initial doctor visits cost $600, and monthly prescriptions ran up to $800, forcing him to quit. “They could prescribe it, but I couldn’t afford it,” Barnes said.

Faced with soaring costs, Barnes tried black-market cannabis briefly before switching to legal hemp-based alternatives like delta-8. “I spend a fraction now,” he noted, getting similar relief for $40 compared to $220 on the street.

But these alternatives are under threat. Senate Bill 3, supported by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, would outlaw THC variants derived from hemp. Patrick did not respond to requests from The Texas Tribune. Gov. Greg Abbott has until June 22 to act on the bill.

Meanwhile, House Bill 46 aims to expand the state’s medical marijuana program. KPRC 2 reports it could lower costs, but Barnes says unless prices drop significantly, he won’t be going back.

  • Texas Considers Banning Products Infused with THC Derived from Hemp, Leaving Retailers Worried

Texas Considers Banning Products Infused with THC Derived from Hemp, Leaving Retailers Worried

A new bill in Texas targeting THC-infused consumables has ignited a showdown between lawmakers and the hemp industry. The legislation, recently passed by the Texas Legislature, would ban the sale, possession, and manufacturing of products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in marijuana.

Despite having some of the country’s most rigid cannabis laws, thousands of Texas retailers sell legal THC products derived from hemp. This loophole was created by the 2018 federal Farm Bill. These items, often sold as gummies or vapes, are especially popular in states where recreational marijuana remains illegal.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a key supporter of the ban, displayed bags of THC snacks at a press briefing and labeled the issue urgent. Governor Greg Abbott hasn’t announced a position yet, but his office told AP News the bill would receive thoughtful consideration.

Industry leaders argue the ban could shutter businesses and cost thousands of jobs. Farmers like Kyle Bingham say it would end their investment in hemp. “It’s hard to walk away from,” he told AP News.

Critics also point to Texas’ limited medical marijuana program, saying many rely on legal hemp alternatives for relief. Dispensary workers warn that the ban punishes small businesses and patients alike.

  • Man Sentenced To 30 Years Behind Bars After Sexually Assaulting 6 Of His Adopted Children

Man Sentenced To 30 Years Behind Bars After Sexually Assaulting 6 Of His Adopted Children

A man from East Texas received a 30-year prison sentence after admitting to sexually assaulting his adopted children. In 2018, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office started looking into Kevin Ray Larsson when one of his adopted kids said he had abused her at just 5 years old, according to KETK Tyler.

After pleading guilty, Larsson was sentenced to 30 years behind bars and fined $2,800. He is banned from contacting his nine adopted children, who are protected by a lifetime order. He must also register as a sex offender. Angela Albers, the Wood County District Attorney highlighted the case’s tragic impact on the victims.

Alberts said, “This case is a horrible tragedy for these children. They were adopted by this man and he was supposed to care for, provide for, and nurture them—instead, he turned into a monster and committed heinous actions against them that they are still suffering the effects of to this day. My office had numerous conversations with the victims and the victims’ mother and discussed the probability of the children being retraumatized by the effects of having to testify against the Defendant in a jury trial.”

A Texas mother is behind bars following a desperate 911 call from her 11-year-old son, who accused her of setting their family dogs on fire, according to Too Fab

Officers from the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office responded to Veronica Loredo’s home after her son reported that “his mother believed he was the devil and was currently burning the family dogs.” While deputies were on their way to the house, they received an additional call from a neighbor, who reported that a woman “just arrived at their residence with blood on her hands and advising her parents have been killed.”

The sheriff’s office has not confirmed any fatalities. However, officers did discover the remains of dogs in a fire burning in Loredo’s front yard, along with Loredo and four children, aged 1 to 11, inside a vehicle when they arrived at the scene.

“Loredo had rolled the passenger side window and was screaming ‘Help, help, help me someone is trying to kill me,’” reads a probable cause affidavit, obtained by PEOPLE. According to the docs Loredo, 32, was also “sweating profusely and had abnormally fast breathing” and “did admit to killing their dogs in front of her children.”

Her son informed authorities that his mother had locked them all inside the vehicle before setting their pets on fire. Loredo was arrested and faces two felony charges for cruelty to non-livestock animals, along with four counts of child endangerment. She is currently being held on a $400,000 bond, and Child Protective Services is reportedly looking into the incident as well.

Police Searching for Texas Man Facing Murder Trial Who Removed Ankle Monitor and Went on the Run

Texas authorities have reported that a capital murder suspect is currently at large after he removed his ankle monitor on the day he was supposed to go on trial, as stated by PEOPLE.

In a social media update on Monday, May 5, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office announced that various law enforcement agencies are searching for Trevor McEuen, who faces capital murder charges. He was expected to appear in court for his trial on that Monday but instead took off his court-ordered ankle monitor around 5:30 a.m. and “left his residence,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“It is currently unknown whether McEuen fled on foot or in a vehicle, and there is no description of the clothing he may be wearing,” the sheriff’s office said. “Authorities also have not confirmed whether he is armed. The public is urged to remain vigilant and not approach McEuen if spotted.”

McEuen faces a capital murder charge in connection with the May 2023 shooting of his neighbor, 35-year-old Aaron Martinez, as reported by ABC affiliate WFAA, KDFW, and CBS News. Allegedly, McEuen told Martinez that Hispanics were unwelcome in the neighborhood shortly after he moved in, according to Martinez’s family.

McEuen was arrested in May 2023 and was released on bond with conditions. He was arrested again in September 2024 for posting threats against Martinez and his uncle on social media. The suspect was held on a $2 million bond and was released after posting it last December. Authorities are now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

  • Teacher Accused of Using Electronic Dog Whistle on 6-Year-Old Student with Autism When He Became ‘Loud’

Teacher Accused of Using Electronic Dog Whistle on 6-Year-Old Student with Autism When He Became ‘Loud’

A Texas woman, who was an elementary school teacher, is accused of using an electronic dog whistle on one of her students to get him to comply, according to Law&Crime.

As per arrest documents obtained by local CBS affiliate KWTX, 46-year-old #AmberEscamilla was arrested on Tuesday and charged with injury to a child or disabled person. The documents reveal that Escamilla was teaching a 6-year-old boy with autism and allegedly used the electronic dog whistle “when he got overstimulated.” The boy’s parents informed the police that their son wore earmuffs to school due to his heightened sensitivity to loud noises.

KWTX reported that detectives from the Waco Independent School District police were notified by Child Protective Services about potential abuse involving a student at Bell’s Hill Elementary School. According to the arrest documents, in November 2024, Escamilla allegedly “came into the break room and placed a device on the table, telling co-workers that she had this for when the victim ‘gets loud.’”

Texas Teacher is Reported by Witnesses

The school principal informed detectives that she confiscated an electronic dog whistle from Escamilla that same month. When questioned about the device, Escamilla reportedly claimed that she only meant to use the dog whistle outside and that she had only ever used it once on the school playground. She further stated to detectives, according to the arrest documents, that “she would only exhibit the whistle to the victim as a threat to gain compliance.”

However, a witness provided a sworn statement saying that in September 2024, “she entered the defendant’s classroom and observed the defendant utilizing the electronic whistle to gain compliance of the victim,” as reported by KWTX. Escamilla is no longer working at Bell’s Hill Elementary School, according to a spokesperson from the Waco Independent School District. She has been charged with injury to a child or disabled person and was jailed with a bond set at $3,000.

Texas Dad Reportedly Told 10-Year-Old Girl to Drive Truck, Resulting in Crash That Killed 6-Year-Old Boy

A man from Lufkin, Texas, is facing a charge of criminally negligent homicide after he reportedly asked a 10-year-old girl to move his pickup truck on Sunday, resulting in a deadly crash. While driving the vehicle, the girl struck a porch with a 6-year-old boy on it, leading to his death as reported by local ABC affiliate KTRE TV

Clinton Earl Johnson Jr., 31, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the incident, which occurred while he and his family were grilling. According to a document from the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office obtained by KTRE, Johnson’s 6-year-old stepson was looking at a cellphone on the porch while the 10-year-old girl was riding her tricycle around the driveway.

At one point, the girl complained that Johnson’s truck was blocking her path, prompting him to allegedly tell her to “scoot it up,” according to an arrest document from CBS 19. Johnson later told investigators that the girl had driven on backroads before, according to KYTX TV. However, the boy’s mother informed the sheriff’s department that when her daughter was behind the wheel, she “got confused” and hit the gas, causing the truck to crash into the porch, KTRE reported.

When deputies from the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they discovered several boards and poles scattered on the ground, along with Johnson’s stepson lying in front of the truck. The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies noted that they detected the smell of alcohol on both Johnson and the boy’s mother, who allegedly admitted to having three or four drinks each. On Tuesday, Johnson was taken to the Angelina County Jail and charged with state jail felony criminally negligent homicide. He was later released after posting a $3,000 bond.

Measles Cases in the U.S. Reach Almost 900, with Texas Reporting Over 600 Cases

A measles outbreak that began in western Texas in January has spread across the United States, per Huff Post. Nearly 900 cases have been reported.

According to data released on Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are currently 884 confirmed measles cases nationwide. Texas accounting for the bulk of the infections—646 cases confirmed in the state since late January. Among all reported cases, 94 individuals have been hospitalized.

Cases have now been confirmed in 29 states. Six states—Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, and Texas—are experiencing outbreaks, defined as three or more related cases. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas has reported an increase of 22 cases since Tuesday.

Since the outbreak began, three deaths have been documented, including two school-aged children in Texas who were unvaccinated. CDC data indicates that 97% of measles cases in the U.S. involve individuals who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown. “Measles is an airborne, extremely infectious, and potentially severe rash illness,” the CDC’s website says. “Before the measles vaccine was introduced, an estimated 48,000 people were hospitalized and 400–500 people died in the United States each year.”

Public health officials have cautioned that the number of cases is expected to keep increasing. “Due to the highly contagious nature of this disease, additional cases are likely to occur in the outbreak area and the surrounding communities,” the Texas Department of State Health Services said in its latest update.
