Father and Stepson Attempted To Disguise Murder-for-Hire As Road Rage, Prosecutors Say

A road rage incident on Grand Parkway in Harris County, Texas, has been uncovered as a suspected murder-for-hire scheme, allegedly involving a father and his stepson planning the attack, according to Law & Crime.

Early on February 4, a 40-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was shot multiple times while driving his work vehicle on Grand Parkway. Fortunately, he survived and is currently hospitalized. Initially thought to be a case of road rage, the investigation took a turn when the cameras inside the victim’s truck provided crucial footage, leading authorities to identify two suspects: a man and his stepson.

Ricardo Obando, 49, and Matthew Rosas, 24, faced a Harris County court following their arrest on February 15 for attempted capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. During the hearing, prosecutors claimed that Obando was supposedly hired to murder the victim, while Rosas was reportedly offered $300 to transport him from the crime scene. Additionally, prosecutors revealed that Rosas confessed to his involvement in the alleged scheme and had been instructed to track the victim “for several days” to familiarize himself with his routine.

Prosecutors said that Rosas was found with “$220 and two new $100 bills at the time of his arrest. He said the $220 was what remained of the proceeds of the shooting.”

Obando, who has a history of felony convictions, is currently being held at Harris County Jail with a bond set at $20,000 for the attempted capital murder charge and $250,000 for the aggravated assault charge. Rosas, facing additional charges for drug possession, is also in custody at the Harris County Jail with a bond amount of $100,000.

A Texas man has been sentenced to 35 years behind bars after abducting a 13-year-old girl in San Antonio, transporting her to California, threatening her with a firearm, and sexually assaulting her. He was apprehended back on July 9, 2023, outside a laundromat in Long Beach, according to the New York Post.

I commend our federal and local law enforcement partners for their efforts to secure justice here.”

Texas Man Fatally Shoots Girlfriend After She Travels Out Of State For Abortion In Colorado, Police Say

In a tragic incident in Dallas, Texas, 22-year-old Harold Thompson has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend, 26-year-old Gabriella Gonzalez, after learning she had traveled to Colorado to obtain an abortion.

The shooting occurred on May 10, 2023, in a parking lot and was captured on surveillance video, CBS News reports.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Thompson attempted to put Gonzalez in a chokehold before shooting her in the head. The affidavit states, “It is believed that the suspect was the father of the child. The suspect did not want [Gonzalez] to get an abortion.”

Gonzalez had returned from Colorado the night before the incident, where she had gone to terminate her pregnancy. Texas has stringent abortion laws, effectively banning the procedure after approximately six weeks of pregnancy since September 2021. Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, nearly all abortions have been halted in Texas, except in cases of medical emergency.

Thompson was arrested later that day and is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail without bond. Court records do not list an attorney authorized to speak on his behalf.

Close to 4:15 p.m., a mother loaded her kids into her car and mistakenly sped into another vehicle, said Javier Salazar, the Bexar County Sheriff, per the New York Post

Vargas had been in a year-long relationship with the teenager. However, Betty chose to end things after Vargas allegedly pointed a gun at her head. On the night in question, around 10 p.m., Vargas and Betty had a conversation on Facebook, according to a criminal complaint. A few minutes later, Vargas reportedly sent her a picture of himself holding a gun to his head, with the caption,

  • Texas Man Claims He Accidentally Shot His Son, Mistaking Him For Intruder, Later Burns The Body

Texas Man Claims He Accidentally Shot His Son, Mistaking Him For Intruder, Later Burns The Body

A father has been charged with fatally shooting his adult son with down syndrome at a home in East Texas, an incident that authorities have described as a

    “bizarre crime,”

    per AP News.

Michael C. Howard, 68, an attorney from Houston, allegedly mistook his 20-year-old son, Mark Randall Howard, for an intruder when he accidentally shot him with a shotgun on Sunday evening. The incident occurred at a residence in Sabine County, located approximately 170 miles northeast of Houston.

According to the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office, Howard did not report the shooting immediately. Instead, he used a tractor backhoe to transport his son’s body about 2 miles away to a remote area on his expansive 2,500-acre property. There, he placed Mark’s body on a wood trash pile and attempted to cremate it. It was not until Monday afternoon—approximately 17 hours after the shooting—that Howard contacted the sheriff’s office to report the incident.

Deputies discovered body parts and bones in the trash pile and sent them to the Jefferson County medical examiner’s office. Michael Howard told investigators that the incident was a

    “horrible accident,”

    claiming he

“cremated his son in accordance with what he felt his son would have wanted.”

Mark Howard, who had Down syndrome, was high-functioning and employed. Two days before the shooting, authorities responded to a theft of a large mower and trailer made by Michael Howard. Deputy J.P. MacDonough did not say if this theft affected Howard’s view of his son as an intruder.

Howard remains in jail in Sabine County on a $20 million bond, facing charges of murder and tampering with evidence.

Mom Arrested After She Allegedly Left 16-Month-Old Son Home Alone While She Went Out Of Town To Meet Man She Met On Hinge

A Texas mom was taken into custody after she allegedly abandoned her 16-month-old son for a man she met on a dating app, per Law & Crime

On July 28, 2024, police in Killeen, Texas, received a call about a child hanging out of a broken window and a report that

“an aggressive dog was trying to attack the child.”

When officers arrived, they found a toddler with his head and shoulders out of the window. The window was broken but had been covered with cardboard.

Inside the apartment, the officer saw the boy wearing just a t-shirt and alone with two dogs that were described as very

    “protective”

of him. The police managed to contact the child’s mother, 25-year-old Reese Louise Myers. She said she had gone to San Antonio to meet a man she met on Hinge and claimed she left her son with a babysitter she found on Facebook.

However, the babysitter told the police she had only cared for the child last December, and their Facebook messages had stopped after that month in 2023. When the baby was found, he had a diaper rash and feces on his skin, reports reveal. Officers believe Myers seemed to plan to leave the baby alone due to the

    “precautions”

that were taken. They noticed that the suspect deadbolt and locked the windows. The doors were closed off, and there was a baby gate blocking the kitchen.

Police told Myers to return to Killeen, but she never did. She was arrested on November 5 at the Fort Irwin Army Base in San Bernardino County, California. Myers was released from custody in California on Tuesday. She was then arrested again by the Killeen Police Department the same day. She faces charges of abandoning or endangering a child, according to FOX 44. The boy is now with Child Protective Services.
