Body Cameras To Be Worn By TJ Maxx and Marshalls Employees In An Effort To Reduce Thefts

TJ Maxx and Marshalls, two popular US retailers, have decided to provide their employees with body cameras as a measure to address the increasing incidents of theft, per the NY Post

This move by TJX Companies comes after conducting trials with the body cameras at selected store locations earlier this year,

“de-escalate incidents, deter crime and demonstrate to our associates and customers that we take safety in our stores seriously,”

a spokesperson for the parent company told FOX Business.

The body cameras will be worn by specially trained loss prevention officers. The company has stated that the recorded footage will only be shared with law enforcement if requested or in response to a subpoena. During a recent earnings call, Chief Financial Officer John Klinger expressed the company’s hope that the presence of the cameras would discourage potential thieves once they are aware they are being filmed.

According to the National Retail Federation, businesses across the country suffered losses totaling $112.1 billion in 2022 due to theft. In response, several companies, including Target and Dollar General, have announced their intentions to either limit or remove self-checkout options at their stores as a deterrent to thieves.

  • Indiana Man Steals Liquor Truck From Outside A Bar In Order To Settle Drug Debt

Indiana Man Steals Liquor Truck From Outside A Bar In Order To Settle Drug Debt

An Indiana man stole a delivery truck full of liquor from a bar parking lot to sell the alcohol and pay off his drug debts, police said per the NY Post

The man, 39-year-old Beau Burchel, reportedly saw the truck arriving at Cheers Bar and decided to take it. He also stole $12,000 worth of beer and liquor along with it. After the theft was reported, police found the truck in a cornfield behind a banquet hall, about two miles away. They discovered Burchel hiding in the woods near the field and took him into custody. He told police he stole the truck and he planned to sell the alcohol to settle his drug debts.

Along with the truck, which is valued at around $50,000, the police also found a skid steer loader worth approximately $60,000, which had been reported stolen earlier in the day. The man confessed to stealing the skid steer and removing its GPS unit. The inside of the truck was damaged as the man tore out the camera and GPS, but all of the alcohol remained in the truck.

Burchel is facing multiple felony theft charges and is currently being held on a $20,000 bond, according to jail records.

Georgia Cemetery Worker Denied Bond After Selling Pre-Owned Burial Plots To Grieving Families

A cemetery worker in Douglas County will remain in jail after being accused of selling burial plots that were already owned by others, per WSBTV. Pamela Teal, who is facing multiple charges including theft by deception and forgery, was denied bond by a judge.

Families affected by this alleged scam claim that Teal pretended to be friendly and supportive, while secretly selling them plots that were already claimed by someone else.

“Well, we thought she was our friend. She befriended all of us,”

Tonya Key said. Key, whose 23-year-old daughter, Faith, died, says Teal has cost them their peace.

“The sheriff’s department uncovered that our plot that our daughter was actually in and the one that my son-in-law actually bought, those belong to someone else,”

    Key described.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Pamela Teal has been found to have sold burial plots to multiple families, including the LaFleur family. The LaFleurs had purchased a plot for their 15-year-old son, Samuel Moon, who tragically lost his life after a Sweet 16 party.

“I still don’t know if Samuel is in this spot where he was buried,”

    LaFleur said.

The sheriff’s office is urging anyone who had any contact with Teal to come forward and contact them.

  • Remains Of Deceased Individuals Discovered At Former Funeral Home Owner’s Residence

Remains Of Deceased Individuals Discovered At Former Funeral Home Owner’s Residence

The Colorado home of Miles Harford, 33, who previously owned Apollo Funeral and Cremation Services in Littleton, was discovered to contain the body of a woman and at least 30 sets of cremated remains on February 6, according to AP News. Authorities made the grim discovery after Harford was evicted from his rented home in southwest Denver.

The remains, some of which were stored in temporary urns, were located in various places around the property, including the crawl space, a moving truck, and a non-functional hearse in the backyard. Denver Police Cmdr. Matt Clark revealed these details during a press conference on Friday, noting that the deceased woman found in the hearse was 63 years old and had passed away in August 2022.

The remains are believed to be linked to individuals who passed away from 2012 to 2021, and investigators are using tags and labels to identify the families.

“At times he was not able to complete cremations to provide remains to families for services. Unbeknownst to families who sought services from Apollo Funeral Services, Mr. Harford may have occasionally provided family members with another person’s cremated remains instead of their family member’s remains so services could be held,”

    Clark said.

Authorities mentioned that the business had been closed since September 2022, and an arrest warrant was issued on Friday for suspected offenses including abuse of a corpse, forgery, and theft.

  • Funeral Home Owners Charged After FBI Discovers Stacked Bodies and Infestation of Flies and Maggots at Funeral Home

Funeral Home Owners Charged After FBI Discovers Stacked Bodies and Infestation of Flies and Maggots at Funeral Home

Investigators uncovered shocking conditions inside a Colorado funeral home, as reported by NPR News

An FBI agent testified that upon entering the premises, they were met with a distressing sight of stacks of partially covered human remains, bodily fluids pooling on the floor, and an infestation of flies and maggots throughout the building. Text messages exchanged between the funeral home’s owners revealed their mounting financial debts and fears of being caught mishandling the bodies.

A co-owner proposed disposing of the bodies by burying them in a lye-treated hole or burning them.

Almost 200 abandoned bodies, 23 were from 2019, and 61 were from 2020, including adults, infants, and fetuses, according to FBI agent Andrew Cohen. The remains were stored at room temperature in a neglected building in Penrose, a small town in the Rocky Mountains.

“It looked like something you’d like to forget but can’t,”

Cohen explained during a hearing for one of the funeral home’s co-owners.

Prosecutors found animal remains and bags of concrete at the scene. Disturbingly, some families received fake ashes instead of their loved ones’ cremated remains.

Reports of a foul smell led to the discovery of the bodies. Funeral home owners Carie and Jon Hallford were arrested in Oklahoma for allegedly fleeing Colorado to avoid prosecution.

The Hallfords are facing numerous charges, including abuse of a corpse, theft, money laundering, and forgery. The investigation is ongoing, and affected families have confirmed their worst fears.

  • ‘Porch Pirates’ Leave Memphis Family Heartbroken As They Steal Grandmother’s Ashes

‘Porch Pirates’ Leave Memphis Family Heartbroken As They Steal Grandmother’s Ashes

A Tennessee family is stunned by a double tragedy as they first mourn the loss of their beloved grandmother and now face the heartache of having her ashes stolen from their front porch, per the NY Post

“It’s definitely been difficult. It’s one of those things where we’re trying to weigh the pros of the situation,”

the granddaughter, Amy Rost told WREG.

Rost’s grandmother passed away in October. Following her cremation, her ashes were divided between Rost’s father, Jeff, and her aunt residing in Ohio. The precious package was then sent to Jeff’s residence in Memphis’ Midtown neighborhood. However, despite the tracking information indicating a successful delivery on December 4th, Jeff was left empty-handed when he went to retrieve it from his front porch. He believed that a thief stole the package.

“We’ve had so many things stolen here. Everything from tables and chairs to a can of Raid. Someone is always coming up and grabbing whatever they can find,”

    he told the outlet.

Memphis was ranked the second worst city in the country for

    “porch pirates,”

according to a report by Safewise last month.

The family is pleading for the person who took the box to return it immediately — no questions asked.

“If I saw somebody bring a box up and leave it on the porch, I’ll leave it til they’re gone,”

    Jeff told WREG.

“I’m not trying to prosecute anybody, it’s just it would certainly be nice to have it back.”

The Rost family said they will be installing a security camera to prevent future thieves from returning.

  • Woman Arrested After Using Detergent To Blind ‘Sugar Daddy’ Who Denied Her $2000

Woman Arrested After Using Detergent To Blind ‘Sugar Daddy’ Who Denied Her $2000

Kaley Renae Medina, 26, is accused of showing up unannounced at the residence of a 61-year-old man, commonly referred to as a

    “sugar daddy,”

in the middle of the night. Authorities claim that she requested $2,000 from him and, when he refused, she allegedly used detergent to blind him, per Law and Crime

These details were revealed by Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, who stated that the pair had initially connected on the website SeekingArrangement.com.

“What it appears to be is one of these — for lack of a better term — ‘sugar daddy’ type sites where people with money meet up with younger people that need money and make some sort of an arrangement to date or what have you,”

    he said.

The man had gone out on a date with Medina earlier this month but had no intentions of seeing her again. However, Tuesday at around 2:30 a.m. Medina showed up at his doorstep and he proceeded to let her in.

According to documents, they engaged in conversation and shared a drink, but things took a turn when Medina asked for $2,000. When the man refused, Medina allegedly became enraged and proceeded to destroy various items in his home, including a mounted flat-screen TV, an entertainment center, and a painting. She then poured laundry detergent on his head, causing burns and temporary blindness.

Medina also stole several items, such as his passport, iPhone, surveillance camera, and a Dyson hair dryer. The man managed to crawl out of his house, seeking assistance while suffering from cuts on his legs and chemical burns to his eyes.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar mentioned that Medina had a previous criminal history, including a DWI charge. Medina was charged with robbery and is being held on a $20,000 bond, according to online records.

  • Toilet Paper Thieves Beware: Washington DC CVS Gets Creative by Replacing Shelves with Framed Photos of Products

Toilet Paper Thieves Beware: Washington DC CVS Gets Creative by Replacing Shelves with Framed Photos of Products

A CVS store in Washington DC has been forced to remove all toilet paper from its shelves and replace them with framed photos of the products due to the rise in thefts in the area, reports the NY Post

Customers now have to press a buzzer to summon a store employee who will retrieve the items from the back. This display was implemented after homeless individuals reportedly started stealing the products without paying. Increased robbery in the DC area has become a trend, with reports showing a 68% rise in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Metropolitan Police Department data reveals that over 3,000 robberies have already occurred this year, a significant increase from 2022. Additionally, there has been a surge in smash-and-grab robberies in the area.

Maryland wellness studio owner, Ben Atanga, told The Post

“This is not just an H street or a D.C. problem — this is something that’s going on all over the country… The economy is going up, cost of living is going up … If people are stealing … items, necessities, you know, I think maybe we should take a look at that,”

    he said.

“Maybe those are things that we don’t increase or maybe as a community we provide that … ‘Hey look, you can come pick up toiletries and stuff like that, so that you can take care of yourself.’“

The rise in theft of retail products in major cities across the United States has led many stores to take drastic measures such as locking up merchandise or closing down completely. New York City has witnessed a 64% increase in reported incidents of retail theft between mid-2019 and June of this year, while Los Angeles saw a 61% surge over the same period, reports reveal.

The National Retail Federation reported that organized theft rings caused retailers to lose $112 billion in 2022, up from $93.9 billion the previous year.

Police Discover Teenage Thief Partying In ‘Machinegun’ Airbnb With Concealed Firearms Throughout Property

A 17-year-old suspect accused of stealing credit cards was apprehended during a wild birthday celebration at an Airbnb, reports the NY Post

Authorities traced the stolen credit cards back to a Shoreview, Minnesota resident.

Police discovered eleven guns hidden in the Airbnb property. The guns were concealed in places like food wrappers, board game boxes, empty McDonald’s bags, and even within unfinished walls, plants, and furniture.

The suspect had multiple violations of the rental agreement, including exceeding the occupancy limit, breaking rules against weapons and smoking, and posting social media pictures of the event.

The owner was informed by the police, and over 50 attendees, aged 15 to 21, were escorted out of the premises for weapon searches.

An investigation is currently underway to determine who is responsible for stashing the firearms at the property.

“This is especially concerning because several of the party attendees are part of a ‘group’ that has enemies – or as they call them, ‘opps,’”

Ramsey County Undersheriff Mike Martin said in a Facebook post.

According to an update from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, the suspected credit card thief

“went from five-star Airbnb accommodations to the county jail.”

Whether the minors involved will be tried as adults remains uncertain.

“The best part is we got 11 guns off the street that won’t shoot somebody, kill somebody you know, or be used for robbery or anything else,”

    Martin told Law & Crime.
