A Colorado teen, Jovanni Sirio-Cardona,16,  is currently being tried as an adult after fatally shooting his former girlfriend in front of her younger brother after she attempted to break up with him, according to the Weld County District Court Division 17, reports the New York Post. Reports say the devastating incident occurred earlier this month.

Prosecutors were led to believe that he told the victim that he was going to murder her after she tried to break up with him. On June 16, Sirio-Cardona was caught running down a path that leads to 15-year-old Lily Silva-Lopez’s home at 3:45 p.m. He then broke into her room by climbing through the window. Lily screamed for her younger brother, who was in another room watching tv. She warned her brother to run moments before shots began to fire, Lily’s 13-year-old brother told officials, says an arrest warrant obtained by Denver 7.

Sirio-Cardona allegedly shot the teen girl several times in her home’s hallway. Lily’s younger brother told officials that he witnessed her on the floor as Sirio-Cardona stood over her with a gun as blood dripped from his nose. Lily’s brother said Sirio-Cardona confiscated his phone so he couldn’t contact the police. The 16-year-old ex-boyfriend also asked Lily’s younger brother to help him move her body before pulling her into her room by himself.

The 13-year-old boy ran to his neighbor’s home and Sirio-Cardona fled. Officials say Lily’s brother pointed out Sirio-Cardona as the shooter. Records say that when officials went to the suspect’s home, and his grandmother asked why he told her

“he did what he had to do and shot someone.”

Domestic violence has come up often in their six-month relationship. Merely six days before she was murdered, the teen reported that Sirio-Cardona hurt her arms and punched her.

Sirio-Cardona has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, burglary, aggravated robbery, and juvenile possession of a handgun, The Post reports.
