A mother in Queensland, Australia, has been sentenced to seven years in jail after her three-year-old daughter died from being left alone in a hot car for over five hours in Nov. 2020, reports the New York Post. Laura Rose Peverill will be eligible for parole in less than two years. The court heard that the toddler, Rylee Rose Black, was left in the locked car as temperatures inside reached about 124 degrees Fahrenheit.
Prosecutor David Nardone argued that the extreme temperatures in the car were
“not survivable.”
Rylee would have experienced suffering that led to a coma and eventual death. The tragic incident occurred on a day when outside temperatures were over about 87 degrees Fahrenheit. Peverill and her boyfriend at the time had gone inside their home after bringing groceries but forgot to take Rylee out of the car.
It was only when Peverill went to pick up her other children from school that she discovered Rylee unresponsive and drenched in vomit. The toddler was rushed to the hospital but died from heat stroke or thermoregulatory failure. Rylee’s father, Peter Black, shared the devastation he felt upon receiving the news and the heartbreak of seeing his daughter in the hospital. He expressed his remorse for not being able to save her.
Peverill’s defense barrister, Victoria Trafford-Walker, explained that her client had been dealing with mental health and alcohol issues for years. On the day of the incident, Peverill was stressed due to moving in with her boyfriend. The court considered these factors but ultimately sentenced her to seven years in prison.
