A woman from California has fatally run over and murdered a man that officials say was attempting to steal her catalytic converter, reports the New York Post

The unnamed woman was sleeping inside her vehicle, a Ford Excursion, as she was in the Palmdale shopping center parking lot. According to the Sheriff’s department, four thieves approached the vehicle close to 6 p.m. as there were two Hispanic men and two Hispanic women who parked in the space next to the woman’s car. Reports say one of the men got out of the vehicle, got underneath the woman’s car, and then proceeded to attempt to take her catalytic converter.

According to the department,

“The victim woke up from the sound, turned the car on, put the vehicle in reverse, and felt a bump like she ran something over.”

The woman then stopped to call the police, as she left the suspect who she ran over overlying underneath her vehicle. When officials arrived at the scene they discovered

“the [vehicle] partially backed out of the parking stalls with the man still underneath and the alleged thieves’ car parked next to it,”

reports The Post.

The man was transported to the hospital where he was later declared dead, while the other three people he was with were apprehended.

Although reports say the case was ruled as a homicide, it’s unclear if the

“theft victim”

will be charged.
