According to officials in Florida, a woman stole a law enforcement vehicle and caused a fatal crash with a pickup truck, resulting in the deaths of herself and two others, per PEOPLE.
Last Thursday, Kendra Boone, 33, started a police chase by stealing a sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle in Marion County. She later drove the stolen vehicle across Florida’s East Highway 40, resulting in a fatal crash.
The press conference
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods revealed that the incident started when Boone attempted to take an elderly woman’s car keys. When the officials arrived, a deputy asked Boone to stay near the back of his patrol car. However, as the deputy stepped out of the vehicle, Boone entered through the passenger window of his vehicle and drove the car after getting into the driver’s seat.
Woods presented video evidence from the police body camera, revealing that as the deputy exited his vehicle, Boone stood next to the open passenger door. The deputy circled the car but noticed Boone was gone. He was later heard saying
“No!”
as he hurried back to the driver’s side and opened the door.
The deputy shouted
“Stop!”
repeatedly as Boone drove off with the door still open. The deputy attempted to chase the vehicle but then radioed,
“She just got into my car and drove away.”
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Boone fled at high speed on East Highway 40, drove east for a while, made a U-turn, and escaped westward to avoid being caught by officials.
The woman lost control of the car and crossed into oncoming traffic, resulting in a crash with a black pickup truck. When the officers arrived, they discovered Boone and three truck occupants unresponsive. Sadly, Boone and two others were pronounced dead at the scene, while another person was transported to the hospital in crucial condition.
