As a young adult, Bow Wow struggled with cough syrup addiction. It took a major experience for him to realize that he needed to slow down. It has been nearly two decades and recently, he revisited the memory to show how far he has come.

Bow Wow Was Consumed With Cough Syrup Addiction

Recently, Bow Wow was a guest on The Art of Dialogue podcast, and he left fans with a shocking revelation. For the first time, the singer talked about his life as a young adult when he was already making it but neck-deep in addiction.

As reported by E! Online, he collaborated with Omarion for their Face Off album in 2007. However, while Bow Wow was giving his best to his music career, his personal life went downhill. The singer relied on lean syrup made of promethazine and codeine.

In his words:

“I was on lean. I was sipping so much syrup… I was just always irritated. No matter where we were at, we’re sipping.”

Eventually, Bow Wow was kicked back into reality after he fell off stage following the effect of lean. He explained:

“I went straight to Cincinnati University Hospital. I’m sitting in the hospital… I’m throwing up, I’m shivering in the bed, I’m sweating, I’m going through it. I didn’t know I was having withdrawals. That’s how much lean I was consuming.”

Bow Wow Credits His PR Manager For Taking Care Of The Public Narrative

While all this was happening, Bow Wow had one person who stuck by his side: his publicist. According to the singer, Pattie Webster, who is now deceased, saved his life:

“She put out a press release [that said I dropped out of the tour] for dehydration. Wasn’t no dehydration… That’s just good PR. We didn’t want the world to know that 18, 19-year-old Bow was heavy on the drank.”

Following the realization, Bow Wow considered staying off cough syrup for life. Now, he excites himself with tequila and weed. Back in 2018, the 36-year-old cautioned youths over taking hard drugs. This came after Mac Miller’s death, which stemmed from an accidental overdose.
