A couple from Utah is now in custody after their 6-week-old kitten was discovered trapped in a plastic sandwich container, with methamphetamine found in her system, Law & Crime reported.

In a parking lot near Salt Lake City, police responded to a call about an unconscious couple in a vehicle. Officers discovered a kitten trapped in a triangle-shaped container, and rushed her to Angel Paws Veterinary Services.

The kitten, Athena, sadly abused with head trauma, singed fur, bruising, and a damaged eye, tested positive for meth and amphetamine. Although her condition has improved from critical to stable, she may still experience long-term effects and could potentially lose sight in her right eye.

The individuals involved, 45-year-old Justin Epperson and Emily Allred, 41, were identified by Salt Lake City ABC affiliate KTVX. When discovered by the police, both Epperson and Allred were covered in cat fur, while Athena was covered in feces. The couple now faces charges of companion animal torture, as well as possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Records from the Salt Lake County Jail indicate that Epperson and Allred were released on bond on Tuesday.
