A Missouri mother was arrested after she accidentally burned her one-month-old baby in an oven, per the NY Post. The mother, Mariah Thomas, reportedly claimed to the police that she mistook the oven for a crib. The scene in their Kansas City home was described as

“gruesome”

by the police, who found the baby badly burnt and unresponsive on Friday.

Thomas told police she

“was putting her child down for a nap, and accidentally placed the child in the oven instead of the crib,”

according to Fox 4.

“Our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life,”

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker told the outlet. 

“We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these awful circumstances,”

he said, according to the local outlet. Thomas is facing charges of endangering the welfare of a child and the death of a child.
