An Alabama mother, Sarai Rachel James, 27, allegedly ran over her seven-year-old son with her car accidentally. According to The Independent, James picked up her son from school on February 9 and, learned of his misbehavior. She instructed him to get out of the car and walk home as punishment.

The incident occurred just a short distance from the school, with the school and their house being eight blocks apart. The boy reportedly tried to grab the door handle as the car was moving, but James accelerated, causing him to be pulled under the car and run over by the back tire. He sustained injuries and was hospitalized for abrasions.

“It was a miracle he was not hurt worse than what he could have been,”

Boaz Police Department Chief Michael Abercrombie said.

According to Mr. Abercrombie’s statement to McClatchy News, investigators think the mother unintentionally ran over her son, but it was her disciplinary action that triggered the event.

“She may not have realized he was doing that,”

he said.

Ms. James faces charges of aggravated child abuse, as indicated by jail records. She was granted release on a $50,000 bond. Additionally, she is prohibited from communicating with her son. Another individual, a 53-year-old woman whose identity was not disclosed by the police, was in the car during the incident. She has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and was released on a $500 bond.
